DEL MAR Picks
The 2021 Breeders' Cup ended last Saturday, but the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will continue to race ... it is the Bing Crosby Season! Carding contests through the end of the month, it will be full of graded stakes action. This is the place to be for turf racing, so get your clippers out grass fans!
At Horseracing.net/us we have you covered with selections for every contest on the card! It is a good time for some of the best that North American racing has to offer. Stay tuned!

Most Likely Winner: (Race 1: Pammy’s Ready #6, 3/1):
The 2 trainers across North American racing that do best when it comes to turf sprints are Wesley Ward (East) and Peter Miller (West). This filly by More Than Ready comes to Miller’s Barn from Ward’s, and off the class drop, she should be primed for a score. She missed being “in the money” in one of those high octane MSW races at Kentucky Downs. With Umberto Rispoli in the irons, this new squad should be able to make some noise burning on the turf.
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Pretty Rena #6, 6/1):
Going with rider Rispoli again, we are backing another offspring of More Than Ready. This filly is a 2-yr-old who ended up 3rd on debut at Santa Anita in a 5F sprint back on 2 October. When Lapenta’s stock gets together with Mike McCarthy, that is a mix I want to be a part of when it comes to wagering. Sometimes when young runners come back to the track for a second time, they are more cognizant of what is actually going on—racing. Taking on this crowd will not be easy, but it could be an opportunity to support a price. Let’s go …
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Turf, 5F, AOC20k, F&M 3+):
If you are game to take on a favorite, then here is your opportunity. Trainer Peter Miller has Hot Rageous #6 coming down from Golden Gate Fields. The filly by Idiot Proof just won by a nose against a rival that has already come back and won. That bodes well, as this one comes down to Del Mar with much promise. Flavien Prat, the turf master of SoCal gets the call. Taking on one that is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbreds means you are playing with fire … but I will tempt fate. Sorry Mr. Wellman …
My top selection in a spot like this one is Brian Koriner’s Shylock Eddie #3. The 6-yr-old mare by Square Eddie is perfectly bred for this kind of contest, and coming back to Del Mar, a track that she knows well, is a smart move. Jockey Rispoli, as we have mentioned above, has the ability to ride with the best of them on the grass, so if you could get 4/1, then that is a heck of a price. With some recent works, that this icing on the cake … she is ready to make a move.
One other runner that I want to seriously consider is Jeff Bonde’s Mamba Queen #7. Here is another Square Eddie, and she is a 3-yr-old with all kinds of talent. Last out at Golden Gate, she led all the way … enroute to a nice victory. Though Abel Cedillo does not have the right turf qualifications when it comes to matching wits with Prat, Hernandez, and Rispoli, he just needs to catch the early break. If his mount can do that, then it will give him a shot at a score.
Let’s use all 3 of these turf sprinters … what a shot!
Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/6/7
