Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 7F, Bob Hope S. (G3), $100k, 2):
As we turn the page to Friday, it is the colts that take the “feature.” All I really have to say about this race is that it is too bad it came up so short. With only 4 entries, after a scratch, there is only one of them that is not from the barn of Bob Baffert. All of his entries look relatively strong … Starlight Racing’s Messier #1 ran away with the MSW61k prize last out at Santa Anita. When you score by 6+ lengths, then that is saying something. Coming into this spot, with Flavien Prat aboard, the Empire Maker colt should have another shot to score. The problem is that he will be a pretty short price. The 2 other “Bafferts,” Kamui #2 and Winning Map #3 also look pretty stout. They both broke their maiden last out, and those efforts were front-running attempts.
While the former was successful back at “Los Al” in September against Marco Polo, it is the latter that was even more impressive in early October at Santa Anita. John Velazquez was aboard that day for His Highness Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud, and now the connections are turning to another celebrated HOF jockey in Mike Smith. Aboard this son of Liam’s Map, he could end up reigning supreme. Let’s not negate the presence of Richard Mandella’s Forbidden Kingdom #5. The last time we saw this son of American Pharoah, he was up against Larry Rivelli’s Breeders’ Cup entry in the Speakeasy S. Most thought he would run a touch better, especially considering his debut race at Del Mar. Maybe getting back to the dirt is what he wants to do …
When it comes to constructing a wager, you might take Prat’s mount and put him on top of Mandella’s entry. I like this configuration because it might offer the best set of odds. I am thinking Baffert’s son of Empire Maker looks best. We will see how it all shakes out!
Wagering Recommendation: Exacta Cold, 1 w 5
