Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 5: Deise Delight (IRE) #6, 7/2):

Trainer Doug O’Neill has a strong turf miler coming into this spot, and the filly out of Brazen Beau (AUS) should be ready for action. She already has 4 lifetime races under her saddle. Three of them came on this side of the pond, and she was always in the money. The transition from Golden Gate to Santa Anita resulted in a 2nd place finish last time. Her recent works have continued to progress well. O’Neill’s prowess precedes him, and you know you are going to get a runner in your corner who looks good rolling down the lane. The best news is Flavien Prat climbs aboard, and we all know what he can do on the grass. At 7/2, or thereabouts, should be just fine …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Five Pics Please #7, 15/1):

Trainer John Sadler has a bevy of entries in this year’s Daisy Cutter 75k, a “Non-G” turf sprint. This one is short—just 5F. The SoCal-based trainer has Constantia #4 and Bruja Escarlata #10 (both at 4/1 on the M/L) … and as a long shot, Five Pics Please #7 at 15/1.

Interestingly enough, of these, the #10 has never lost in 3 starts. Only one of those was on turf for the Hronis-owned filly out of Street Boss, so it will be interesting to see her take on higher company as Tyler Baze is the only jock to have ever ridden her. As for the #4, she is a 4-yr-old filly out of Munnings who has begun going well of late. She jumped into the Monrovia (G2) at Santa Anita (2nd), after winning the race prior—Mizdirection 75k. I am not sure if jockey Jose Valdivia is up to the challenge in here, but he will try.

The final Sadler entry is actually my long shot pick of the day … and there is some major upside. The #7, out of Cinco Charlie has sprinting in her blood … through and through. She has frontend capability, and that could be a weapon in here. Having Umberto Rispoli in the irons is a good sign too. Her conditioner has her pointed in the proper direction, and at double-digit odds, this one is a bet for sure.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #7 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 1 1/16th, California Dreamin’ S., $150k, 3+):

With no clear prohibitive favorite in this spot, it is going to be difficult to sort out just who will end up at the top of the tote in the end. Certainly, North Country Guy #10 has a shot to climb the ticketed mountain of pulp. This is a seasoned turf miler for trainer Richard Baltas, and the 6-yr-old gelding is coming off a 2nd place finish in a 100k “Non-G” at Santa Anita. That was back in April, so if you are betting this one, you might want to take that into account.

Personally, I like others which could offer better value. For instance, I have always like Mike Puype’s Ward ‘n Jerry #6. This is an 8-yr-old that has been around the block. His conditioner has had him plying his turf trade in long distance races, so the cutback might be an interesting angle in which to exploit. Some of his back class is inviting, and with Trevor McCarthy aboard, he can get this done. How about 8/1? Yes indeed … it is Puype.

One other runner that looks like he is ready for his close-up, is Jeff Mullins’ gelding out of Mizzen Mast. Unbridled Ethos #3 does not have the class that others do, but his turf experience is sound. Winning by a neck last time in an OC40k race could be viewed as a plus. If you think he can extend out to this distance, then it could be a nice play. The odds will be boxcar-esque, and Ricardo Gonzalez is a rather unheralded rider when compared to Prat, Hernandez, and Rispoli. Let’s toss him in … should help fill in the gaps.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/6/10
