Gamine will be the red hot favorite in the Derby City Distaff

The Grade I Derby City Distaff is one of the top races on the Kentucky Derby undercard and might be one of the top races outside of the Breeders’ Cup for filly sprinters.

The $500,000 purse for four year-olds and up has attracted six runners including our editor’s favorite filly. Check out the Entries and Post Positions below along with an overview of the field from our editor.

Look there is no surprise that I’m leading this piece off by saying Gamine is in the field. It may be a year ago that she blew away the field in the Grade I Acorn up at Belmont Park but runs like that do not just fade in the memory. They are here to stay and ever since that sunny day up on the NYRA circuit - I have rated this daughter of Into Mischief extremely highly.

The only blip on her resume was in the Kentucky Oaks where it seemed like two turns was too much for her. Since then she’s paired back to sprinting and for me she was the easiest pick in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup where she ran - and won - the Breeders; Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. If there was a Future’s Market for that race today - I’d back her without a semblance of hesitation.

The four-year-old shook off the rust with an easy win at the Grade III Las Flores over at Santa Anita earlier this month. She wasn’t asked to remotely run and still cantered home comfortably. There is no doubt she’ll be a super red hot favorite but is he unbeatable…?

The winner of last year's Derby City Distaff returns in an attempt to defend her title. Bell’s the One for trainer Neil Pessin has been putting up some nice scores over the year or so and has won twice on the spin under the Twin Spires. Last time out she finished second in the Grade I Madison over at Keeneland. She has already seen Gamine in the aforementioned BC F&M Sprint where she would finish third. No doubt this classy filly will have some support but not from me she won’t.

Estilo Talentoso tied for second with Bell's the One last time out and was also runner-up at Laurel Park in the Barbara Fritchie - the winner of which is also in this race. A decent looking horse here but not going to trouble the Winner's Circle.

Sconsin has struggled since victory in the Eight Belles on the 2020 Oaks Day undercard. A fourth place finish in the same BC race as the two mentioned before followed by a seventh place in the Grade I Madison. Seems like a real long shot to challenge at the front.

Another Into Mischief Mare has been entered as winner of the Grade III Barbara Fritchie at Laurel Park - Hibiscus Punch - has been shipped down from Maryland. That was a nice win against a decent field but no-one of the ilk of Gamine or even Bell’s the One were in that race. Peter Miller also sends out his five-year-old mare Unique Factor.
