Distaff Turf Mile 2021 Results: Blowout blows out the competition

The Graded Stakes Races this Kentucky Derby Day have started with the Distaff Turf Mile which was Race 6 on the card. Both our in-house handicapper and turf-man liked Blowout going in and the bettors agreed as five-year-old Mare was quickly bet in from 7-2 as was joint favorite with Get Stormy just before the start although as they got under way - Blowout was in to 9-5 with Get Stormy 5-2. Our editor was on board Zofelle as the six runners were led towards the starting gate.

Blowout had a recent history of losing right on the line having finished second in four straight - twice to Viadera in the the Noble Damsel and the Grade I Matriarch. Jockey Flavien Prat asked her to go early and she led big early with an extremely slow pace. At the half-mile she was eight lengths clear of her rivals but as they went around the far turn the pack started to close in and they made it a real contest.

Zofelle got to within half a length but in the final 20 strides she was unable to hold on to her speed as Blowout held on and even pulled out a length as she crossed the line for a good win. New York Girl nipped past Zofelle to take the second spot. The big disappointment on the day was Get Stormy who just had nothing in the final stretch.

A good start for two of our three handicappers!

The payouts weren't great as all three of the horses who hit the board were short prices but Blowout paid out $5.80 for the win with the $2 Exacta a $49.20 price. The 6-3-4-7 Superfecta was a nice $542.10
