The class of the field is Aunt Pearl. After a prolonged winter break following victory in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Fillies Turf in November - trainer Brad Cox has sent her to Churchill Downs for the Edgewood before possibly a trip over the pond to the Royal Ascot festival in the United Kingdom.
Despite this being a big race in its own right - this feels as though it is a tune-up for that trip to Ascot and potentially a big turf race at the Breeders’ Cup. No doubt whatsoever she’ll be one of the biggest favorites in any race across the Derby weekend at Churchill Downs.
This feeling is enhanced by the fact only one other entry has a win at Graded Stakes level on turf on their resume. That filly is the Todd Pletcher trained Jouster who won the Grade II Appalachian at Keeneland earlier in April. That win came hot on the heels of a second-place at the Florida Oaks in March. There is a lot to like about this one and if anyone can touch Aunt Pearl then surely it in Jouster. I’m not sure anyone else in the field is remotely good enough to challenge and she has been handed the six post.
When the Todd Pletcher trainer filly Zaajel won the Forward Gal down at Gulfstream in January it wasn’t too much of a surprise. The daughter of Street Sense paid out just $3.20 for the win. Two months later though in her next outing - she was nowhere to be seen in the betting payouts for the Fair Grounds Oaks and subsequently a decision was made to try her out on turf. There were many questions about whether she would be green lit for this race but after the Entries were official - she was there and will break from the outside and Post Position 7.
The runner-up in the Grade II Appalachian has been entered by trainer Karl Burke. Gift List is a bit of an unknown having raced as a two-year-old over in the UK. That one run in the US was more than decent but unlikely to challenge for the win. A place on the podium however wouldn't be a big shocker.
Barista, Queen of the Green, Line Dancing and Postnup round out the field without too much excitement behind any of them. This is most certainly not what you'd call a deep edition of the Edgewood. It is Aunt Pearl's race to lose. Has she scared away some of the other potential entries?
