Edgewood Stakes Results: Aunt Pearl falters; Gift List romps

It is always fun when my colleagues and myself are on different horses. We talk in our work IM chat about the races and congratulate along with rip each other for good along with bad picks. Going into the Edgewood however we were all in exactly the same boat.

Our in-house handicapper and I both had Aunt Pearl as our Most Likely Winner of the Churchill Downs card. Our turf-man also had her as his selection for this race. So either we are all followers and can't oppose a favorite for we just think the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner was just that much better than the field.

Aunt Pearl opened at 4/5 on the Morning Line but I think it was fair to say the Horse bettors were with the three of us as she was swiftly backed into 1/9 before leveling out at 1/5 by the time they left the starting gate.

The big time favorite strode to the front early with Zaajel on her outside and the two of them looked really comfortable as they turned for home but then Aunt Pearl had absolutely nothing. I mean absolutely nothing. She was swamped coming down the stretch as Javier Castellano on board Gift List surged into the lead and went away from the field. Supreme closing speed and Barista and Line Dancing followed her home. It was a fine win but the story is Aunt Pearl. A huge favorite not even competing is always absolutely stunning. A potential trip to the UK for the Royal Ascot festival now seems far less likely.

Brad Cox speaking to NBC Sports after the race said that she just put in a flat effort and she hasn't earned the right to travel across the pond.

Gift List was a 4-1 shot and paid out $10.80 for the win with plenty of value for Barista and Line Dancing as well.
