The Eight Belles was a wide-open race according to our turf-man in our IM chat as we nattered away this Oaks Friday. Both of us are on board the Bob Baffert three-year-old filly Kalypso. The winner of the Grade II Santa Ynez back in January at Santa Anita was in the mix for the Oaks but her trainer said after the Santa Ysabel - where she finished third - that she would be cut back in distance. Our aforementioned turf-man commented that she's a sprinter through and through and is surprised money isn't coming in on her.
Our in-house handicapper liked Caramel Swirl and seemingly so did plenty of Horse Bettors as she got bet into 5-1 by the time they loaded into the Starting Gate. The Bill Mott trained daughter of Union Rags broke her Maiden at Keeneland on her fifth attempt last time out but that did come with an 88 Beyer and winning by ten-and-a-quarter lengths. So the team were well and truly divided going into this one. Slumber Party was another who saw early money moving in from 6-1 and at one point in the pool was the favorite before Dayoutoftheoffice got that spot back late.
It was the favorite who broke nicely and went to the front and controlled the race pretty nice. It was her and Caramel Swirl who made running coming into the stretch and it was the former who pulled clear and romped towards to a clear victory.
But.
Then Jose Ortiz turned on the after-jets of the Bill Mott trained Curlin filly Obligatory and it was like she was running in a different race to everyone else. It was like watching a bunch of 400metre runners looking strong before Usain Bolt decided it was time and did a 100metre sprint and blew everyone away. It was that much of a speed difference between the fast finishing winner and the rest of the field. She paid out an extremely nice $35.00 for any bettor who nailed this single.
Dayoutoftheoffice finished second with Into Mischief filly Make Mischief scoring a nice show price.
