Sunday's card at Ellis Park includes a robust slate of 8 races that offer some excellent betting opportunities, as their Summer Meet opens. We will bear witness to some nice 2-yr-old races, a hallmark of Ellis.

As usual, our turf-man has you covered, including a "spotlight" of the "feature" of the day. Check it out!

Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Swill #4, 4/5):

A “Graded” type runner that is coming off-the-bench, Brad Cox’s son of Munnings is a gelding who is coming to Ellis to start his latest campaign. When we saw him last time, it was in the Jerome150k up at Aqueduct. He was 4th out of 5 then … this spot, a much easier one, should serve as a good prep back. Florent Geroux will serve as guide, and he should be able to work out a suitable trip. His recent work tab is something to smile about …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Mo More #1, 12/1):

Here is a wide-open turf event that has a Brad Cox favorite called Pine Knoll #6 leading the tote charge on the M/L at 5/2. I am willng to take a stand against this gelding because although he is out of City Zip, he missed last out at Churchill. It was only by a nose, but a loss is a loss. As for Chad Brown’s entry Orchestration #5—Klaravich Stables—this colt is a first-time starter that is untested. Back him, at your own risk …

My choice in this spot is a high-priced entry from the barn of Ian Wilkes named Mo More #1. Well-bred, the offspring of Uncle Mo have some strong turf ability, and this colt’s conditioner has deep experience at Ellis. Switching this 3-yr-old from the dirt to the grass is a smart move, and could well be the perfect bet at this price. You might not get 12/1 again. Brian Hernandez rode well on the sod earlier in the year at the Fair Grounds. He can start anew at this Meet. Bet ‘em …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Turf, 1 Mile, ALLW52k, 3+):

The supposed “Feature” of the day is this ALLW Co. race which pits a good group of short routers against one another. The jockey colony is starting to assemble, and the trainers are putting their short and long-term plans in place. One of the main approaches that conditioners regularly employ on the turf circuit is to begin the season here, with the target of transitioning to other Meets like Kentucky Downs.

Early races in June at Ellis are tough to figure because there is little data to go on. No jockey trends, track set-up, or really any tendencies. Maybe the thing to do is play some exotics, and hope to spot some developing trends. For this turf ALLW event I want to count on several entries which should cover us. How about Wentru #2, Knight’s Cross #3, Money for Mischief #4, and Continuation #5? Each of these have attributes, and have the ability to win. I continue to be impressed by Juan Cano’s operation. He is flying into this Meet. Should be fun to watch …

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 2/3/4/5
