Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Stormy Stella #3, 7/5):

Trainer Mike Maker comes back to Gulfstream looking to vie for the training title. Of course, Todd Pletcher stands in his way, but that will not stop the Kentucky-based conditioner from putting up a fight. He and Three Diamonds Farm get together often, and they have a Jack Swain-bred 2-yr-old filly, by Twirling Candy, who is coming down from Keeneland to race on the AW. With Tyler Gaffalione in the irons, this is a formidable triumvirate, and I would expect them to be able to do some damage in a race like this one. A lower condition can make the difference sometimes when it comes to kick-starting a new campaign. Everyone else that is drawn in here better watch out …

Wager: $100 Win, #3

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Bohemian Boy #10, 5/1):

Speaking of Twirling Candy, when his offspring take to the grass, they can be quite accomplished. This Mark Casse trainee won his debut, but that was back in January for Ironhorse Racing Stable. Still, that means you are going to get an excellent price from a barn that really knows how to get their charges ready. The gelding’s works at the Casse Training Center look particularly sound, and I have confidence that Edwin Gonzalez can get the job done. Maybe the price on this one will get above 5/1 … that sounds like an overlay to me. Bet’em …

Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #10 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: AW, 1 1/16th, AOC25k, F&M 3+):

After a slew of AW races at Gulfstream Park since they opened the new course a couple of months ago, one salient point has remained … favorites win. Coming into this race, the veteran trainer Roger Attfield looks to get a victory for Sweet Serenade #6, a filly by Tonalist who possesses a solid amount of talent. Last out, she was second in a high-level AW race on the Tapeta at Attfield’s base—Woodbine. Coming down to sunny Florida, she could make the transition nicely. Probably the most controversial jockey in North America makes an appearance aboard. Irad Ortiz was put through the media ringer after he recklessly won several races last Saturday at Aqueduct (the video is quite telling). He lit out of NYRA-ville, and headed to his home country of Puerto Rico to take some mounts. Even though he was suspended for 30 days (he will not be appealing) by those folks, it was in NY, not Florida … therefore he can ride. I am not against putting this runner on top, but I much prefer David Fawkes’ Grand Ave Girl #8. By Runhappy, this 3-yr-old filly aready has a win on the surface back in early November, and it was a good one—7+ lengths. As she moves up in class, she has the opportunity to really shine. The best news is that she gets Tyler Gaffalione aboard, and he is an aggressive fellow who is always ready for a duel. I would expect that he and Ortiz will have a number of battles over the course of this Championship Meet. Let’s put Gaffs and his filly above Ortiz’s mount, then we can roll the rest of the field underneath for a Trifecta score!

Wager: Trifecta Wheel, $2, 8 w 6 w 1/2/3/4/5/7/9/10

Enjoy another fab Wednesday trackside for the Championship Meet! Best of luck on another run at Gulfstream Park!
