Most Likely Winner: (Race 1: Solar Tap #6, 3/1):

In this MC event, I particularly like the look of Mike Stidham’s colt by Tapizar, and I see him winning the day nicely. Not only does this able-bodied conditioner go with “Blinkers On” for some much-needed focus, but the colt is dropping in class from the MoC level. With GP Tapeta experience under him, and the abilities of Luiz Saez in his corner., this spot appears appropriate. Nothing like the 3rd in the cycle angle too … Saez and Stidham always seem to work well … icing on the cake.

Wager: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 11: Simms #11, 10/1):

Even though there has not been much turf racing down at Gulfstream this past week, we are hoping that changes today. I like a long shot in the finale that has some major potential from the barn of Mark Casse. Talk about a colt that just seems to be full of grass bloodlines … American Pharoah (sire) and Quarter Moon (IRE) (dame). The best news is two-fold, in that the 3-yr-old got her debut out of the way on the Tapeta @GP. That was not a poor effort, ending up 3rd (3-back). Jockey Edwin Gonzalez has a serviceable Meet going right now, and his turf stats speak to being there when it counts. I always want a lawn jock with the ability to make good decisions. Trust in the breeding, and a HOF trainer can also assist …

Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #11 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Dirt, 1 1/16th, OC62.5k, 4+):

Here is a competitive dirt OC62.5k contest, as 7 will go. This is a tough type of race, not only because of the conditioner, but since there is a such a short amount of distance from the gate to the 1st turn. That will put some pressure on the ones drawn towards the outside. Luckily, Chad Brown’s Highest Honors #7 may not need a perfect break, since this is a Tapit horse who can come from off-the-pace. Owned by Bill Farish, I like that Tyler Gaffalione gets the call once again. The former 2019 Travers (G1) participant that was off the following year, should be able to tackle this field if he can take to the GP MT. Looking for others to round out a Superfecta Wheel include: Fausto Gutierrez’s Capocostello #2, Todd Pletcher’s Vindictive #4, and Bill Mott’s Olympiad #5. I am hoping that Gutierrez’s entry will be a long shot, and really beef up the payout. This 6-yr-old is coming to the U.S. for his debut after besting some impressive company in Panama. You might not consider that geographical location to be a center for Thoroughbred racing, but since 2019 he was in a half dozen G1s … not too shabby … winning nicely. Don’t forget either that his sire was Cross Traffic, a member of the Spendthrift Farm cadre. Gutierrez had quite a “coming out” party in ’21 with Letruska, and I would not underestimate his abilities. Getting 1st time Lasix has to be considered a plus too. Let’s use ‘em … here is the ticket.

Wager: Trifecta Wheel, $2, 7 w 2/4/5 w 2/4/5 w 2/4/5

Enjoy another fab Saturday trackside for the Championship Meet! Best of luck on another run at Gulfstream Park!
