PICK 4…

LEG 1: (Race 8: Dirt, 6F, Sugar Swirl S. (G3), $100k, F&M 3+)

The start of this Late P4 sequence is a Grade 3 for older females, and we have quite a crowd drawn in here. Out of these 8, I am pretty keen on the sprinting ability of Paulo Lobo’s Center Aisle #5. The well-bred daughter of Into Mischief has been in races like this before, back when she competed for Chad Brown. Since coming over to Lobo’s outfit, the filly has done nothing but win. An ALLW Co. score was followed by an OC62.5k score … both were in KY. If she can get to the front, she will be tough to catch with the hot riding of Luis Saez. Despite these assertions, it is hard to overlook the ability and class of Bill Mott’s entry, Frank’s Rockette #3. Also, by that celebrity sire Into Mischief, she is always in the hunt with some tactical speed that is pretty impressive. Using her appears to be a must … Just in case either of these runners cannot get the job done, I really think the price on Arnaud Delacour’s Sosua #8 will be sweet. Here is a filly by Speightstown who gets “blinkers” and the services of Edwin Gonzalez. She is shortening up after running in a “BT” over at Laurel last time out. Sprinting is her game … let’s go with these 3 to start this ticket with a bang!

Selections: 3/5/8 (3-Deep)

LEG 2: (Race 9: Dirt, 1 1/16th, Harlan’s Holiday S. (G3), $150k, 3+)

The next portion of this LP4 is just as form-full with a pair of tough route runners in Josie Carroll’s Mighty Heart #1 and Todd Pletcher’s Fearless #6. Both of these seasoned runners have form in gobs. Based at Woodbine in Canada, Carroll’s excellent runner won the Autumn (G2) back in mid-November. By Dramedy, this is one of this conditioner’s best of all-time. Johnny V gets the call, and I would not be surprised he wins nicely. As for Pletcher’s pal, this gelding by Ghostzapper just missed at Gulfstream in an Hcp60k last month. He is looking for redemption, and with Luis Saez in the saddle, I would not count him out. When Pletcher and Saez team, they are an absolute juggernaut. I think going 2-Deep in this spot makes the most sense. Here is to hoping one of them gets the job done.

Selections: 1/6 (2-Deep)

LEG 3: (Race 10: Turf, 1 1/8th, Ft. Lauderdale S.(G2), $200k, 3+)

Heading to the grass course at Gulfstream, which used to be more expansive before the invasion of the AW track, we have one of those races that I always circle on the calendar. Going 1 1/8th is a tough one, but there are some veterans in here that can handle the chore. Tops on my list is a longshot … Mike Maker’s Atone #11. At odds of 12/1, this gelding by Into Mischief will be overlooked, what with Chad Brown’s short-priced favorite drawn in. That gives Maker the opportunity to surprise us all … he has done it before. This one was a Godolphin homebred before coming over to the Three Diamonds bunch. The 4-yr-old has a good thing going right now, and I like the way that Emisael Jaramillo is riding on the turf. His ability is sound … decision-making, patience, and timing. Let’s use this one, and of course, Chad Brown’s L’Imperator #2. I know this is not terribly inventive, but we cannot negate the power of Brown. He continues to be America’s leading grass trainer, and with good reason. Like Maker’s entry, this one is moving up from running in good company at the OC80k level at Aqueduct. Time to come south where it is sunny … Moving right along …

Selections: 2/11 (2-Deep)

LEG 4: (Race 11: Turf, 1 1/16th, MSW60k, 2)

Here is the precise reason I saved my picks … the finale … In typical GP fashion, we end on a tough one. A group of MSW Co. 2-yr-olds are about to turn into 3-yr-olds, but not before they have one last try. It comes on the turf! My top selection goes to Todd Pletcher’s Misbehaved #5. This is a colt, again by Into Mischief, who is dropping out of running in a high-level MSW90k at Belmont. Owned by the excellent Bob Lapenta and Eclipse T-Breds, he is probably going to benefit from the trip to Florida. Luis Saez gets the call again (he already rode this one 2x). Looking through the rest of the form, I quite like the following, who will give us a shot in case Pletcher’s charge fails to fire … these are: Bill Mott’s Immokalee #1, Chad Brown’s Ridley’s Major #9, and the “AE” Grey Charmer #16. That will get this ticket home, and maybe, maybe we can get one of these that is not the favorite. One can hope …

Selections: 1/5/9/16 (4-Deep)
