Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 10: Everesting #2, 3/1):

I am bullish on the sire Frosted. In fact, I think his offspring have the opportunity to take his prowess in the breeding shed to a whole new level. The versatility is pretty impressive. It doesn’t matter if it is dirt or turf … these Thoroughbreds can rate and run. This colt who comes from the Joseph Barn has ability, but he did not have any kick last time at Gulfstream Park. Now, is the time for some redemption, and I am convinced that he can do it. Time to climb the mountain.

Wager: $100 Win, #2

Favorite I Am Against: (Race 4: Vintage Style #6, 8/5):

The George Weaver runner, Vintage Style #6, looks inviting when it comes to handling these types of events. The filly was 2nd in a MSW47k race at Gulfstream Park last time, but those odds were pretty high. I have a sense that she will digress a bit in this spot, and 8/5 is just too short a price. Instead, I like a former Christophe Clement router who was pretty game at Tampa Bay in a pair of races. Tranquillina #3 is a filly out of Liam’s Map, and now that Lisa Lewis is in the training driver’s seat, things could go even better. At 4/1, the price is right, and we will see how it all turns out.

Wager: $2 Exacta Cold, 3 w 6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Chao #6, 6/1):

Saffie Joseph’s training prowess continues to be strong throughout the latter stages of the Gulfstream Meet as it transitions to the summer months. He has a runner, Chao #6, that might drift up toward 8/1 or, if we are lucky, towards 10/1. This colt is out of Noble Mission, and those offspring are pretty impressive when it comes to handling the grass. Jockey Edgard Zayas continues to ride well, and he can get this one home, if he can time the ride properly. I say ... 3rd time the charm for this barn should be just the ticket.

Wager: $100 Bankroll, #6 (W-$10, P-$15, S-$75)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 1 Mile, HCP70k, 3+):

The “Feature” on this Monday card is a good ole fashioned Handicap race on the grass with 11 drawn in. Gulfstream is working on its new all-weather track, but the turf course is still intact with all-systems “go.” Mark Casse’s Chuck Willis #8 is a gelding who will take a significant amount of money since he scored last time out in an OC62.5k 7½F contest. That makes 3 wins in-a-row for the Tracy Farmer-owned long sprinter, dating back to last year when this one was running well at Woodbine—Casse’s main base. Jockey Miguel Vasquez should be able to step-up and do it once again. However, some others might need to be considered as well. Take a look at Saffie Joseph’s Renaissance Frolic #2 out of Paynter, who was not too shabby running 2nd in the Appleton (G3) back on the Florida Derby undercard. Including him is a must. One other to take seriously is Mike Maker’s Me and Mr. C #1. This one was stellar a couple races back at Tampa in their Turf Classic 110k going 1 1/8th. With the cutback, he might enjoy it, and take advantage of the opportunity. Should be a sharp contest.

Wager: $2 Exacta Box, 1/2/8
