Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 9: Charge It #10, 6/5):

Trainer Todd Pletcher is trying to catch Saffie Joseph in the Trainer Standings, and he should get a win with this budding talent … a colt by Tapit. These kinds of horses can be precocious, and also impressive when it comes to routing. Pletcher’s charge just missed in his debut at Gulfstream back on 8 Jan. Luis Saez guided him that day, and will do so again. Even though he missed out on an Eclipse Award, he is still a champion in my mind. This Whisper Hill Farm homebred has been working well at Palm Beach Downs, and I fully expect that his maiden will be broken. Is Pletcher thinking this one has a role to play along the Derby Trail? We shall see … stay tuned.

Wager: $100 Win, #10

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 10: Sigiloso #8, 8/1):

I do enjoy looking through the form, trying to always find a runner that is getting back to something that she/he has not done for some time. This Antonio Sano colt by Khozan is just such a runner. If you just look at his past 3 races, then you might miss his turf ability at the OC/ALLW Co. level. Sano gave this one up for a race, before getting him back. After last year’s Florida Derby (G1), the conditioner decided it was high-time he tried the grass, and it was not a poor decision. Jockey Junior Alvarado gets the call once again, and his numbers are adequate when it comes to this surface. If he can catch the break, and get to the lead, this race might be over. The price is certainly going to be square at 8/1.

Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #8 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 5: Turf, 5F, Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint S. (G3), $100k, 4+):

With 12 races on this Saturday card, there are a ton of options. But we cannot negate the star power of Rusty Arnold’s Gear Jockey #7. He is making his 1st start of ’22. There is no question that his presence at Gulfstream on the turf makes him inviting to bet on, and for that reason alone … I want to try and beat him. We have seen our fair share of “celebrity” entries this time of year, and they are not always ready to run. Of course, he is going to be a very short price—odds on—especially with that classy record from last year. I actually did not show him much respect in races he competed in ((KEE/SPA/KD), and each time, he proved me wrong. If you are going to catch him on his heels, then this is it. As far as a top selection, I like Belgrano #5, a gelding trained by Frank Russo, because he is pointed in the proper direction. Last out, the son of War Front was 3rd in the Tropical Turf Stakes (G3). He was 49/1 on the tote, and ended up paying $14.60 to Show. Nothing like one that can outrun his odds … plus, he is cutting back in distance … all to the good. Rider Isaac Castillo is in-town from Tampa to take the mount. As for the rest of the field, I am going to roll them underneath to finish 3rd. That should take care of business …

Wager: Trifecta Wheel, $2, 5 w 7 w 1-4, 6
