Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Spirit Wind #5, 2/1):
In this 6F burst, I particularly like the entry from Ralph Nicks' midst. This is a 3-yr-old Florida bred that is looking to make the jump into this “Non-G” race. Of course, that will not be an easy ask … this is horse racing after all … What she has going for her is a last out score that signified the breaking of her maiden. Considering she was coming off a long break, and it was only her 2nd career race … that is saying something. Now, as she tests deeper waters, I am comforted that Tyler Gafflione gets the call. His riding career continues to go well, and I think he is just the right jockey to pilot this filly by Bahamian Squall. She scores for Nix …
Wager: $100 Win, #5
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 10: Belgrano #6, 10/1):
If you are looking for some major value on this card at Gulfstream, I would not overlook Frank Russo’s entry. The gelding by War Front speaks turf based on his bloodline … War Front, Danzig, and Malibu Moon, included … Last out in the Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3), the 8-yr-old was pretty sound, ending up 3rd. Sure, he lost steam, but the result was still positive. Adding the aggressive riding of Jose Ortiz, only makes this grass mower more inviting to wager on. Ortiz should be able to work out a great trip! Double-digit odds, here we come …
Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 11: Dirt, 6F, Hutcheson S., $100k, 3):
The “feature” on this Saturday card is the annual renewal of this dirt sprint—the $100k Hutcheson. Out of these 7, I am sure that George Weaver’s Nitrous Channel #4 will get the nod as the race time favorite. That is probably just, especially since the colt by Nyquist posted such an impressive speed fig when he broke his maiden first out at Gulfstream Park on 5 Feb. Tyler Gaffalione was aboard then, and will be again. I am not sure I want to take such a short price on a runner; plus, sometimes a runner can regress after such a strong showing. Instead, what about the form of Todd Pletcher’s Provocateur #5? Last out in the Pasco S. $125k at Tampa Bay, the Into Mischief colt was outkicked by a runner who ran back in that track’s Derby. With Irad Ortiz in the irons, you know this Pletcher pal is going to get bet down … the question is … by how much? Some tote board watching seems in order. Just in case he ends up as the favorite, I also want to back Chris Davis’ American Sanctuary #2. This son of American Freedom is making his 1st start since running in the BC Juvenile (G1) way back in early November. He had a nice run coming out of Prairie Meadows in Iowa, and battled Pletcher’s Double Thunder in a pair of stakes at Monmouth and Keeneland. His latest works at Palm Meadows look pretty impressive, and his maturity/growth over the winter will be on full display. Taking him on top … that should bring some major value!
Wager: Trifecta Box, $2, 2/4/5
