Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner:  Jordan’s Leo (Race 5) - There are some rather intriguing first-time starters in this race, but it’s doubtful any of them will be able to stack up to Jordan’s Leo, who is clearly best among those that have run. This filly is coming off a long layoff having last run at Saratoga Race Course last summer, however that shouldn’t be an issue considering the strong numbers her trainer Todd Pletcher has with such horses. If anything, it’s probably fair to expect her to improve in her first start as a 3-year-old, which is going to make her very tough to overcome in this spot.

Best Value:  Positive Phil (Race 3) - This is a pretty evenly-matched group of condition claimers, but Positive Phil sticks out to me as being a cut above the rest. At one point in his career he was routinely Beyering in the low 80’s on the Gulfstream turf, and while It’s taken him a long time to rediscover that form I believe his last race signals he’s back in top shape. The horse that beat him last out, Cairo Campaign, came back to win, and I believe Positive Phil will do the same if he gets any semblance of a clean trip.

Other Races of Interest:  Race 6 - This is another highly competitive turf race on a solid betting card, which is why I’m picking Mista Donzella (#7) to post the mild upset. A lot of horses in this race have similar running styles and are difficult to trust coming from off the pace, whereas Mista Donzella has the speed to work out a favorable trip here. I think he ran better than it looks in his last race in which he was chasing a pace that completely fell apart, and I’m expecting him to bounce back for Aubrey Maragh, who I’m expecting to have a strong meet as he rejoins the training ranks at Gulfstream.

Race 9 - She’s not going to be a big price, but I can’t resist picking Awsum Roar (#2) in this turf sprint. This 7-year-old mare is as honest as they come, especially at Gulfstream, and she should get all the pace she needs to set up her late kick. She hasn’t quite been able to break through her first-level allowance condition, however she’s a very good fit at the starter allowance level and even her morning-line odds of 3-1 would represent good value on her given her penchant for finding the wire.
