Gulfstream begins the week with a solid nine-race card on Thursday

Gulfstream Park kicks off another week of racing with an action-packed nine-race program on Thursday. A Gulfstream aficionado, our in-house handicapper has delved deeply into the card and provided picks for the whole thing, as well as analysis of his strongest opinions throughout the day.

Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner:  Discreet Tune (Race 9) - French Reef may go off favored in the finale, but I think he pales in comparison to recent maiden winner Discreet Tune. Many are probably going to be turned off by how long it took Discreet Tune to notch his first career victory and dismiss it as a fluke since it was vastly better than anything he showed previously, however I think this horse has simply turned a corner as a 4-year-old. The second and third-place finishers from that race came back to win, validating the 80 Beyer Speed Figure Discreet Tune earned, and I’m fully expecting him to run back to that strong effort, which is going to make him very tough to beat.

Best Value:  Gypsy Wife (Race 1) - Gypsy Wife is another on this card that just seems to be getting better as a 4-year-old. This filly ran deceptively well over this turf course three starts ago for a much pricier tag, and last out she confirmed that her improvement was legitimate with another sneaky good effort, this time against starter allowance foes. I wish she’d displayed a bit more early speed in those turf starts, but either way I think she’s going to make her presence felt in the stretch at what should be a square price.

Other Races of Interest:  Race 6 - Abiding Star (#2) needs a firm turf course to do his best running, but he should get that on Thursday with plenty of sun in the forecast. An 8-year-old gelding that has been a force in the mid-priced claiming ranks, Abiding Star ran a cracker last out in his first start with trainer Peter Walder. Although he had to settle for second in that spot after being nailed on the wire by the surging Mid Day Image (#9), who has won three in a row at Gulfstream, Abiding Star is going to benefit tremendously from the cutback in distance in this race. Going 7 ½ furlongs around two turns is right up his alley, and I expect him to assert his class here.

Race 8 - I can’t lie, I have a soft spot for Citrus Burst (#1) since he was the linchpin to me taking down a Rainbow 6 score on January 9, but that isn’t the only reason I think he’s going to win the day’s featured eighth race. His connections have always treated him as a top horse, and slowly but surely we’re starting to see why. He’s progressed steadily since his debut last winter and ran the race of his life last out in the Silks Run. While that wasn’t a vintage turf sprint stakes at Gulfstream, it’s certainly no disgrace to get beat by Carotari, who is a rock-solid member of that division. As Citrus Burst’s main rivals’ form begins to taper off, this horse is only getting better, and with another forward move he’s just going to prove too good for these.
