Most Likely Winner: (Race 5: Strong Embrace #10, 6/1):
I am puzzled that Kathleen O’Connell’s filly by Strong Mandate is 6/1 on the M/L. After winning on debut at Tampa Bay back in late November, we would expect her to be ready for more action at Gulfstream. I realize the TAM alums do not always garner the respect that they might deserve … still, here is a conditioner with some excellent abilities, who has a strong Meet going on, as we speak. What makes this budding turfer even more inviting is that she gets Jose Ortiz in the irons. His clip right now is impressive, even though it seems like he just arrived from riding up at NYRA. I cannot imagine that this one will be 6/1 come post time … dare to dream.
Wager: $100 Win, #10
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 2: Silver Cloud #5, 5/1):
Trainer Danny Gargan has a solid record when it comes to “1st outs” and spotting his new charge’s next race. This 4-yr-old filly by Goldencents was firing in some tough AW sprints up at Arlington last summer. Those were some difficult OC75k events, and she made the switch to the turf with ease. The last time she competed was at picturesque Keeneland, in one of their challenging Clm Co. races. A “place” finish was none too shabby … Gargan pairs with top rider, Luis Saez, and I think the conditioner has her ready off-the-bench. Looking at her works … she should be fine. What a play!
Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #5 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 Mile, ALLW40k, 4+):
The Wednesday “feature” is this contest … going 1 Mile on the MT at Gulfstream. With a field of 7, it presents us with a solid betting opportunity, as long as scratches abate. When it comes to a race time favorite, I am sure that Rohan Crichton’s Revelde #7 is going to take some action. This isn’t a “Super Barn,” but they have some quality runners. Irad Ortiz gets the call, and he is always over bet. Just off-the-claim in January, the 5-yr-old by Khozan won last time out. Now, his new outfit is getting aggressive and sending him up the ladder in class. One other that will be getting some attention, belongs to leading conditioner, Saffie Joseph. Rivaling Todd Pletcher for the “Title” in South Florida is never easy, but Joseph is more than just hanging tough. I like Tiz Rye Time #6, a 5-yr-old gelding by Tiznow. Not only does he get Tyler Gafflione, but he is going to take another crack at this level. Last time, he just missed the “minors,” even though he held the top spot on the tote. Ownership group, C2 Racing, is looking for another score at this Meet. I am going to spurn both, as far as either being a top selection ... in other words, both are a pair of underlays. Instead, I am much keener on Carlos David’s Gump #1. This experienced son of Brethren was 3rd, actually finishing ahead of Joseph’s #6. He can build on that effort, and should, this time around with Junior Alvarado back aboard. Maybe we can get the price to drift a bit from 9/2 towards 5/1 … what a gift that would be! A top selection, even though he only has 1 win in 15 starts at Gulfstream. Optimism … springs eternal …
Wager: Trifecta Box, $2, 1/6/7
