On the line was an all-expense-paid trip to Del Mar … the date … the Breeders’ Cup Classic in early November. The titanic Grade I $1 Million Haskell Invitational Stakes brought together a group of former alums from the Kentucky Derby entrants—including Brad Cox’s Mandaloun #3, Doug O’Neill’s Hot Rod Charlie #4, and Steve Asmussen’s Midnight Bourbon #6. Favoritism fell to O’Neill’s charge at 4/5, and it seemed that everyone was debating how jockey Flavien Prat would ride him at the break. Should he take him back, or challenge the field on the lead?

At the break, Following Sea #1 ridden by Joel Rosario, wrangled the lead from Midnight Bourbon #6. It was a tussle up front, but jockey Paco Lopez managed to break free on the backside. Lopez looked nervous, taking a peek every so often as if he were waiting for the coming onslaught. It finally came just before the top of the stretch. Prat, ranging his mount up into the 3-path, made the move to lug him in. Florent Georux, riding Cox’s entry, brought his runner into view, taking a spot along the rail.

As the 2 favorites began to go hoof-to-hoof, Lopez dropped back … but just as he did, his front leg was clipped by Prat’s colt … everyone held their collective breath. Midnight Bourbon #6 stumbled, ejecting Lopez. In the wake of that spill, Hot Rod Charlie #4 and Mandaloun #3 dueled to the wire. In the end, Prat nudged his charge, winning by less than a head. The bob got him across. As the replays rolled, it became clear that Midnight Bourbon #6 was the victim of a clipped heel. The Stewards at Monmouth tried to act quickly, and in good order they “DQ-ed” the O’Neill runner. He was placed last … much to the chagrin of many a bettor. In yet another twist of irony, it was Mandaloun #3 who was elevated to the “win.” Paying $8.20, his Kentucky Derby case still hanging in the balance.

In the end, was Hot Rod Charlie #4 the victim of happenchance? Maybe … Could Prat have made a different decision with a riding crop in his hand? Maybe … Dissenters will crow at the top of their lungs. What we do know is that a dangerous situation quickly materialized, and at this point, we are unsure of Lopez’s medical status or that of Midnight Bourbon #6. Hope springs eternal that they are both in good health. In the end, it was a Pyrrhic victory for Mandaloun #3, as Juddmonte and Cox earn fare to Southern California for the Breeders’ Cup. Another Grade I along the Classic Trail is in the books.
