What could have been for Dr. Post. The runner-up in the Belmont had his opportunity to have a rematch with Tiz the Law at the Kentucky Derby but after careful consideration, the three-year-old was pointed to Saratoga where he’ll lead a seven-horse field for the $150,000 Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes.

The race has attracted four horses that took to the track in Derby prep races but the Morning Line oddsmakers have billed this as a battle between Dr. Post and Happy Saver, who is stepping up to Graded Stakes races for the first time.

Both horses are trained by Todd Pletcher and Happy Saver is coming off the back of breaking his Maiden at Belmont in June and winning an Allowance race at the beginning of the Saratoga meet. That run saw him notch up an impressive 95 Beyer, which is identical to what Dr. Post put up at the Belmont.

Dr. Post meanwhile was fully expected to be pointed towards the Derby and took on the Grade I Haskell in the interim. A third-place finish wasn’t what his trainer expected having trained well in the run-up to that race. A Derby berth was available but the decision was made earlier this week to skip the race and go to the Spa instead. A good run here though may well mean the Preakness is next up.

Mystic Guide will be wearing blinkers for the first time and could well attract some interest behind the top two in the betting. He was 11 lengths back at one point at the Grade III Peter Pan before rallying well to end up third just three and a half lengths behind the winner. This shows he has speed and stamina. A good performance most certainly isn’t out of the question.

Jesus’ Team, Liveyourbestlife, Celtic Striker and First Line round out the field of seven. Our in-house handicapper will be back here on Friday with his thoughts ahead of the race including those all important Picks...
