Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Exulting #8, 9/5):

Owned by Michael Hui and trained by a guy named Maker, this gelding by Tapit has all of the skills to get the job done in this Starter. Running at Oaklawn Park, he comes to Keeneland with high hopes. If he is running at his best, then he should win against this crowd. I realize he has his moments, but Maker prepares them well, and this standard bearer is classy. The services of Tyler Gaffalione only make the argument stronger.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #8

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Fair Game #3, 8/1):

Bred and owned by Watts Humphrey, this promising filly has some inviting lines that were forged at Tampa by Vicky Oliver. A daughter of Honor Code, she has a pair of consecutive wins to her credit. I like her late running ability, and she should be ready for this class jump. Rafael Bejarano still has some of the turf riding magic that he exhibited a few years back in SoCal. The dam side is strong in turf too, and I like the price on this one. Do not count out the Oliver Barn!

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Turf, 5½F, ALLW130kb, 4+):

The turf sprint is one of the toughest races to handicap because frontend speed or those that exhibit some nice turf-of-foot late in the game, can win … Of course, at Keeneland in contests like this one, Wesley Ward is “King.” His numbers don’t lie, and he has the ability to train his runners to break ever-so sharply. Owned by Richard Ravin, Maven #2 already has a strong resume, and the gelding by American Pharoah is sure to take money. Ward bred this one himself to be a sprinter, and it will be interesting to see him make his ’22 debut. With John Velazquez aboard, he has a chance to make a splash. I like to play against Ward … I mean him no disrespect. Looking for value is the name of the game, and I am pretty keen to bet young Reeve McGaughey’s Haunt #9. Ridden by expert jock Joel Rosario this gelding by Ghostzapper has some major plusses. He is dropping out of a Turfway “Non-G” that was contentious. Claiborne Farm serves as co-breeder and owner, so that is a major tick to the good. I wonder why it has taken so long to make the decision to put this runner on the grass. With class, and some recent works, I think Rosario has a great chance to get the job done against what is going to be a prohibitive favorite. Let’s go after a nice Exacta!
