The 147th Kentucky was a little bit different to last year. Churchill Downs may not have been full but there was a distinct murmur from the fans in situ and it just felt like a completely different experience coming through the pictures on NBC.
Last year our team was well and truly on Tiz the Law and we were shown up. This year we were all on someone different so hope was high in our virtual office that one of us would win. J.N. was on Essential Quality all the way and even had him over Life is Good when the Baffert horse was still on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. He had a nice Futures ticket in his pocket which was set to pay out a lot more than what bettors were getting today.
Sean was torn between Hot Rod Charlie and Medina Spirit but went for the former when push came to shove. There is little doubt that the horse has improved throughout the year and his win last time out at the Louisiana Derby was legitimately impressive. You can see why he liked him.
Our operations manager Mick is more of a casual bettor but he came away suitably galvanized by Rock Your World's win at the Santa Anita Derby to back the winner on dirt and turf this year.
As for me - I went for Highly Motivated. I am still saddened Life is Good is not here but love the bloodline and he made Essential Quality really work for it in the Blue Grass, so evidently he's getting better. Soup and Sandwich was my long shot play.
Medina Spirit broke fastest and he went to the front early to set the pace. Soup and Sandwich and Helium followed him and the three made their way through the first half-mile leading the way. Coming around the final turn Soup and Sandwich fell away but Medina Spirit kept up a fast pace. Hot Rod Charlie came at him as did Mandaloun. Favorite Essential Quality came late too but Medina Spirit has never - never - been passed by a horse in a race and that didn't change today.
Bob Baffert wins the Kentucky Derby for a record seventh time and personally I am delighted. I know I didn't back him but I had him at #1 in my contender list after his Robert B. Lewis win and said he was the gutsiest horse I saw all year. I should've remembered that but the Santa Anita Derby run scared me off. Not sure he is a Triple Crown contender but he is a fantastic little horse and is a worthy winner of the race.
Medina Spirit paid out $26.20 for the win. Mandaloun $23.00 for the Place and Hot Rod Charlie $5.20 for the Show.
The Exacta paid out $503.60. The Trifecta $848.45 and the Superfecta $9,450.
