The Feature Race of the day took place under sunshine and a stiff breeze at Churchill Downs this Friday afternoon as 13 horses challenged for the Kentucky Oaks with Ava's Grace having been scratched. Last fall this was hyped up as a match race between Gamine and Swiss Skydiver but Shedaresthedevil came through and that was clearly no fluke. This year handicappers were a bit more open about who was going to win.

Our team clearly liked Travel Column with the Brad Cox trained winner of the Fair Ground Oaks Sean's top pick and both J.N's and my backup choices. J.N. was rolling the dice however with the other Brad Cox entry Coach whilst I was on undefeated Curlin filly Malathaat.

The market mover however was Pass the Champagne. A Morning Line price of 15-1 saw plenty of action and by the time they broke from the Starting Gate the price was in to 6-1.

Pre-Race, trainer of Search Results Chad Brown informed his jockey Irad Ortiz that if he could - get to the front and take the race to the field. Steve Asmussen also told the jockey of his three-year-old Pauline's Pearl to do the same from the inside post. All this indicated that it could be a rather fast pace.

Travel Column, Moraz and Search Results were the three who got out to the front from the break and the three of them kept up a strong pace through the first half mile. Pass the Champagne had a shocking start and was out of it within ten strides. Favorite Malathaat really struggled at the start but an aggressive ride from her jockey pushed her through the crowded field and got her up to fifth coming up to the final turn. By that point she was four-wide but jockey John Velazquez asked for more.

The filly responded well and as they came down the stretch it was Malathaat and Search Results who were going at it stride for stride. It was a battle of wills as they pulled away from the rest of the field. A bit of incidental contact in the final furlong changed nothing and in the final five strides it was Malathaat ($7.00) who went clear to win the Kentucky Oaks for trainer Todd Pletcher.

You have to give enormous credit to the jockey who rode a fantastic race to cajole the Ashland winner to take out the Ashland-Oaks double. Search Results was second with Will's Secret making up the trifecta. That paid out $232.25 for the 10-12-11 top three.
