Who will follow in the esteemed footsteps of Monomoy Girl and win the Kentucky Oaks?

The draw for the 2022 edition of the Kentucky Oaks took place on Monday as the 14 runners were allocated their posts via the standard pill pull method.

With a $1.25million purse, it is one of the most famous races for fillies anywhere in the world and is the highlight of the Friday card at Churchill Downs

All the Post Positions are listed below along with an overview of the draw itself. Our man JN Campbell will write up his guide to all the entries later in the week...

The 2022 edition of the Kentucky Oaks looked like battle of two outstanding three-year-olds a month or so ago but things have changed a wee bit since. D. Wayne Lukas' Secret Oath was set to be arguably one of the top fillies in recent years. Many looked upon the daughter of Arrogate as a genuine Kentucky Derby contender and she did run against the boys at the Grade I Arkansas Derby back in early April but despite being a very short-priced favorite, she only came home third. At that point her connections decided it was the Oaks rather than the Derby and she'll from the inside position but opens at a surprisingly long 6-1. That performance clearly scared the oddsmaker at Churchill Downs. The inside post is not ideal however.

Undefeated Echo Zulu is the other top choice for many and this daughter of multiple Grade I winner Gun Runner has been lights out so far in her career. She won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at the end of 2021 and her only run in 2022 was a strong victory in the Grade II Fair Ground Oaks. This should be a great battle and with Steve Asmussen having one of (if not the) top choices for the Derby on Saturday in Epicenter, an Asmussen double wouldn't be the most surprising thing in the world. She has been allocated Post Position 6.

Todd Pletcher has three fillies in the field and Nest, who is a daughter of Curlin looks like the best of the bunch who won the Grade I Ashland in April. Lots to like about this one and in what some may think is a small surprise, will be your 5-2 Morning Line favorite. She breaks from PP 4.

Turnerloose won the Grade II Rachel Alexander in February and will no doubt attract some exotics interest. Brad Cox is a masterful trainer and she'll leave PP 12.

Trainer Shug McGaughey has a bit of an outside the box three-year-old as he'll be sending out undefeated Kathleen O. from Post Position 10. This daughter of Upstart has looked strong against albeit soft competition down at Gulfstream so far in 2022. I'm very interested to see how she runs and at 7-2 - maybe she isn't as outside of the box as I was expecting.
