The Los Alamitos Futurity will not be the most keenly watched race in the Road to the Kentucky Derby but five horses have been entered as the early steps are taken towards Churchill Downs in May.

Neil Monnery has picks for the card and an overview of the race of the day…

With only five horses having been entered into the race, the depth of the field is really rather shallow. When you add the fact that two of them are currently trained by a trainer whose horses cannot accrue Kentucky Derby points then it is fair to say that when we are talking about horses in Derby week, it's not the most likely that any videos of this race will be studied in depth. If they are then it will surely be for Messier (#3).

This son of Empire Maker has looked good in his early races and clearly has plenty of speed. The big question is about how much stamina he has in his legs and whether two turns will be the proverbial turn too far. I’m not really sure we’ll know the answer to that question even if he wins here as the quality of the race is really not all that high. That win in the Grade III Bob Hope was impressive enough and he does seem to have a big stride that could translate nicely into going distance. He’s a 1-2 favorite on the Morning Line and that is too short for any single bets but of course he has to be used in multi-race tickets.

If you want a value play as a single bet, then maybe bet against Bob Baffert, which hasn’t exactly been the way to go in this race over the years. Since this race moved from Hollywood Park, the trainer has yet to lose. I do however quite like Durante (#2). This Doug O’Neill trained two-year-old took three runs to break his Maiden but when he did - last time out at Del Mar - he looked solid enough. He isn’t as good as Messier but he could easily go off at 5-1 which would be a much better play than the favorite at 1-2.

This race is all about how Messier looks going two turns. If we are talking about anything else on Saturday evening with regards to this race then I’ll be quite surprised. He’s going to be the story, win or lose.
