Sean's Take...
It’s hard to see a path to victory in this running of the Derby for Midnight Bourbon, but he ran consistently well in all three Fair Grounds preps and with no killers in this group (sorry, Essential Quality) it’s the right year to see if you can get lucky. He’s a horse with good tactical speed that has already been acquainted with the Churchill Downs main track, so luck could have a way of finding him, and it wouldn’t at all be a surprise to see him in the exotics mix here.
J.N's Take...
Before stablemate Super Stock sprung the upset in the Arkansas Derby (G1), this son of Tiznow was probably going to be Steve Asmussen’s only entry in KYD147. His experiences, running through the Louisiana Series of “Preps,” was nothing short of impressive. When you consider those fields and the company, finishing 1st in the Lecomte (G3), then 3rd in the Risen Star (G2), and finally, 2nd in the LA Derby, that is actually a nice list of performances.
Bred by Stonestreet Stables, the Winchell-owned entry doesn’t excite with his running style, and that could be why he is being overlooked as one of the possible frontrunners. There is nothing particularly wrong with the way he competes, and looking ahead to the Derby, getting HOF rider Mike Smith sounds like a dream. Smith has so many major wins under his helmet, that they do not call him “Big Money” for nothing.
The connections are happy to have him, I am sure. This past week, during workouts at Churchill, this colt got loose, and there were some tense moments as handlers scrambled to corral him before he hurt himself or others. He seemed on edge. Everything worked out, so use that information as you see fit . . . ready to run, or a basket-case with all the hoopla that is in store during Derby Week?
