Miss Preakness Stakes 2021 Picks: Cash Infusion with Cox's Inject

Preakness Weekend is finally upon us, and the run-up had its share of drama. Bob Baffert and his Kentucky Derby Champion, Medina Spirit, became the focal point. His hubris, mismanagement, and outright audacity taxed the sport in a way that has yet to be realized or understood. Now, as the scene shifts to the home of the Maryland Jockey Club at Pimlico, its oldest signature race takes center stage.

Before we get to a Super Saturday, the day before brings us Black-Eyed Susan Day. A full slate of contests appears on tap, and we at HorseRacing.net/us, have you covered with a bevy of selections, and our focused analysis. Both our turf-man and our in-house handicapper are on hand to offer their “expert” opinions. Stay tuned …

The Grade III Miss Preakness has attracted a field of nine this Friday. Street Lute will be one of the fancied horses having been last year's champion Maryland juvenile-filly.

Our man J.N. Campbell is here with his thoughts ahead of the race.

The team at HorseRacing.net put together slates of selections for most thoroughbred tracks racing in the US every single day. The Picks page (linked to below) is updated at 3AM ET every day with all the selections for the upcoming slate...

Race 10: Dirt, 6F, Miss Preakness S. (G3), $150k, 3F

Much like the Eight Belles (G2) on the Derby card, the Miss P (G3) anchors the Friday card on Preakness Weekend. Fillies who can dash will line up in the hopes of scoring a major victory in the “Graded” event. Historically, burners like Lost Raven, Vertical Oak, Happy Like a Fool, Covfefe, and last year’s victor, Wicked Whisper, have added their names to the pantheon of female 3-yr-old speedsters.

When we are talking about running at distances on the dirt of under 6 furlongs, it is never a straightforward proposition, especially since we have some runners that are drawing in here after running in the Eight Belles on Derby Weekend. Those include a pair of racers that wholly missed the board—Abrogate #1 and Euphoric #8. They were 5th and 10th, respectively. I do not care for either of them, running back at this 1 furlong-less distance than before, and I am happy to leave them out.

Instead, I much prefer an entry like trainer John Ortiz’s Joyful Cadence #9 who should be rested and ready for action against this group. Though this filly’s speed figs slipped a bit last time in the Purple Martin 200k at Oaklawn against eventual winner, Abrogate #1, I still like her chances. Getting Irad Ortiz, America’s be-all rider, is a great sign as these Ortiz’s pair up.

Others entice even more … I would also consider Wesley Ward’s Red Ghost #2, who was pretty game last time in a tough ALLW Co. contest at Keeneland back in April. With Johnny V aboard, she was strong down the lane, as she swept to victory. If she can take a step forward here, then that would be an impressive class hop. Speaking of hiking, a couple of Laurel locals in Paradise Song #4 and Street Lute #5 are ready to strut their stuff against some challenging competition. That could translate to victory here at PIM with the price being more than right.

For me, top of the food chain would be the appropriately named Inject #7, who needs to find her way into all your tickets. Brad Cox can never be underestimated, and this Florent Geroux-ridden filly has major potential after she was stupendous late in an ALLW race at Keeneland in April. The Frosted link is incredibly inviting, which makes her a nice one to wager on. Big chance … at a possible great price.

Top Selection: Inject #7
