Morning Line Odds: 12-1

Trainer Bret Calhoun, to me, is one of the most underrated horsemen in the game. He regularly vies for training titles in the southern circuits (FG, OP), and I think he goes about his business in a workmanlike manner. This is an interesting horse in this particular position because he absolutely spurns the adage of “clean faces win races.” His style is to come from well-off the pace and make a big run in the stretch. Horses on dirt do not do that normally, so that adds up to requiring a hot pace. If he gets it, then he could be a nice price (post time: maybe 15-1?). But he can also die by the sword if he encounters traffic or they are creeping up the backside.

Mr. Big News made up some ground at the end in the Derby under Gabriel Saez, which paid a nice Show price for 47-1 shot. This jock did it in unbelievable fashion back in a 200k race at Oaklawn in the slop, and he was the exact same price then too. Maybe some rain will hit the Baltimore area, but a peek at the forecast does not look promising - sunny high 66 degrees.

As for the pedigree, I am not too sure about Giant’s Causeway offspring on the dirt. United, Aquaphobia, and lesser known Eons are all turf horses. This sire might be more geared to that surface. I always am a huge fan of Triple Crown Trail Thoroughbreds moving to the turf as 4-year-olds, and maybe that is where Mr. Big News needs to head. I will of course, defer to his trainer. Afterall, he has By My Standards in his stable, an accomplished colt headed to the Breeders’ Cup.

Chance: Sneaker Award, but needs a hot pace
