Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Sarah Harper #2, 2/1):

Here is a nice filly by Vancouver (AUS) that is part of the excellent barn of Ron Moquett. If you do not know much about this Hot Springs-based conditioner, then let me tell you … he does it right. Moquett mixes the latest innovations with tried-and-true methodology. I like this runner because she always seems to come to play, and after 4 starts, I think she can win at this level. The excellent Ricardo Santana gets the call, and we know that it is probably going to be a sloppy mess out there. Best to turn the piloting duties over to a seasoned jock like Santana … he should be able to get this one home.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 9: Victory March #9, 8/1):

Trainer Bret Calhoun does not have a large string at Oaklawn, but he deserves respect. I consider him a class fellow. In this contest he has an uncoupled entry that is pretty interesting. Go West #5 will get bet, but I actually like his higher-priced stablemate. Victory March #9 is a colt by Maclean’s Music (sprint sire, for sure) that was well-bet back in early December. That's when the 4-yr-old got his debut out of the way. David Cabrera was on him then (6th place), and he has a shot to improve in this spot. His recent work tab looks strong enough, even though OP early morning action is tough to interpret. Horses start to figure out what is going on by their 2nd race … I am hoping he sticks around 8/1 on the tote.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #9 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 3/16ths, OC80k, 4+):

A distance test is on the books for Sunday, and it is going to be a good one! Steve Landers Racing has a well-known runner that is going to get back to business in the new year … ’22. Trainer Brad Cox scored yesterday with Coach in the Pippin S., and he sends Night Ops #4 back to the post. The last time we saw this deep router, the son of Warrior’s Reward was pretty far back in the Clark H. (G1). Florent Geroux knows this one through and through, and is going to try and get him out early, in order to secure a nice striking spot. He could be sharp, but my biggest concern is that he has not won since mid-2020. Let’s face it though, he is the class of this field. To be honest, I am not sure anyone drawn in here compares to him on this last point. The only one that comes remotely close is Steve Asmussen’s Tenfold #9. This veteran by Curlin has plenty of “Non-G” Co. behind him, but he is rather like his adversary, he does not win all that often. Asmussen is going to hand the riding duties over to Ramon Vasquez, and he is having a good Meet so far. We know Winchell invests in their own homebreds, and maybe this will be the 7-yr-old’s day. I am calling this one ice-cold … Exacta time! That should fit the bill … Cox v. Asmussen … round …

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 9 w 4

Grab one of those Corned Beef sandwiches trackside! Best of luck on another run at Oaklawn Park!
