Most Likely Winner: Sugar Love (Race 3) - This mare is coming out of a far tougher allowance race at Oaklawn in which she finished a close third behind Ocean Breeze, who is a fringe graded-stakes type. This drop doesn’t have to be a big one, but in this case it really is given the competition lined up to face her. It would seem Robertino Diodoro has this one humming since claiming her three starts ago, and a repeat of her last race would make her virtually unbeatable.
Best Value: Blackberry Wine (Race 8) - It seems hard to believe that a horse exiting some solid graded-stakes tries would be able to offer value in this race, but there are a few career underachievers from top outfits that figure to siphon off significant money. I doubt Blackberry Wine will be 7-2, which he is on the morning line, but he should still be an acceptable price and if he simply maintains his current form he’s going to beat this field. He was able to make the transition from Fair Grounds to Oaklawn successfully last year, and I imagine nothing will have changed in 2021.
Other Races of Interest: Race 2 - Shaharazad (#3) ran too poorly to be believed in her last start, which came on a wet track she may not have cared for. Prior to that she’d been pretty consistent on dry dirt, and perhaps the recent claim by trainer Tom Amoss can wake her up again. If she does revert back to her previous main track form she’s going to be difficult for this field to handle.
Race 9 - Like Blackberry Wine one race prior, Will’s Secret (#2) may offer some value in the G3 Honeybee due to the presence of some overrated runners from top outfits. Despite winning the Martha Washington rather convincingly in her last start over Coach (#8), who was an odds-on favorite in that spot, I’m not sure the betting public is going to fully catch up to Will’s Secret as there are other less accomplished runners from attractive barns. If Will’s Secret does end up near her 7-2 morning-line odds, she’s very much worth a play.
