Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: To a T #1, 5/2):

Here is a Florida bred in this AOC who looks like a sparkling diamond to my eye. Runners that come from this state are on the rise after Medina Spirit “won” KYD147 … maybe they are on the uptick. As for this “T,” accomplished trainer Saffie Joseph rolls up from the Sunshine State looking for loot and plunder. Last out, his filly “captured” a win on the Parx track. She should be able to make it 2/2 what with Frankie Pennington in the saddle. This one looks like a solid pick, and maybe the price will not be too short by the time Track Announcer Chris Griffin calls “Runners at the gate …”

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #1

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Monaco Princess #4, 8/1):

This long turf sprint or short grass route … depends on your perspective … has some options for us as far as the tote goes. I am price shopping in the clearance section, as the blue light is ablaze … Monaco Princess #4 could be just the angle, as she is a mare with experience. In 29 career starts she has 7 wins, which might not seem impressive, but $191k+ earnings aren’t poor. Trainer Joe Taylor had her in a Clm12.5k 2-back that was taken off-the-turf, and she won nicely. Then, when she did have the chance to get back on the green at the same level, she was hot early, but faded late. If Angel Rodriguez, who takes the mount, can settle her early, then he might have a much better chance when he pushes the button at the top of the lane. Working out a trip and being patient is very difficult. The best news of all … her price is destined to float upwards from 8/1. She is a bet!

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Dirt, 7F, ALLW35k, PA breds-3+):

Out of these PA breds you could go with a “Servis” entry, the son of one of the greatest racehorses in the history of the “Keystone” state, or you could just simply back the M/L favorite at 5/2 … the choices, oh those choices. The Servis Family has roots in Pennsylvania racing going back apiece.

In this race, John sends his able-bodied gelding named Kidnapped #5 into the fray, and he is coming off a 4th in a “Non-G” affair. This spot will be easier, and getting Jorge Vargas looks like a bet to my eye. The offspring of Violence are extremely versatile. As for the connection to Smarty Jones (the “Little Engine That Could”), another Servis has Our Philly Special #10 looking to improve off some poor performances. This one has already 24 starts under his belt, and well-over $100k in earnings. Maybe jockey Salgado can work out a trip … his odds will be double-digits for sure!

As for the favorite, I Am Redeemed #4 … he gets Frankie Pennington, and it is probably deserved at odds of 5/2. Considering he finished 2nd last out in an AOC, and won on debut, breaking his maiden, he looks stout against this group. Maybe the play is a “Tri Box,” and let’s see if we can get another price horse like Pylon #8 to hit-the-board as well.

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 4/5/8/10
