Pimlico Racecourse has solid nine-race card on this Friday! What a week it was in Thoroughbred racing, as we are back in Baltimore. As usual, our turf-man has you covered with selections for the whole card and additional analysis of his strongest opinions throughout the day.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Souper Fortune #9, 4/1):

There is a particular angle I want to try and exploit here, and I think that you will be pleased with the result when it comes ticket cashing time. Race 7 is a salty MSW race for 3-yr-olds, but most in here have little in the way of experience. You will not find much turf success, but I still particularly like Souper Fortune #9 from the barn of Mike Trombetta. Jockey Toledo gets aboard, but what makes this one so inviting is that he already has his debut out of the way. It was not a poor effort, and sometimes when they are coming just off of that experience, there can be excellent upside. This one is a “Win” wager all the way, and if you get 4/1, it will be a dream.

Wager: $100 Win, #9

Favorite I Am Against: (Race 5: Hightailing #6, 5/2):

A good group of 3 to 5-yr-old fillies and mares will run in a MSW contest. These turfers are hitting the grass course at Pimlico, and I would not be surprised to see the M/L favorite failing to finish 1st. Don’t get me wrong, going against Shug McGaughey and Stuart Janney is playing with fire, but I was not impressed with Hightailing’s #6 effort at Old Hilltop last time on 25 April. Granted that was on a muddy track, but she was the overwhelming favorite. Sure, Orb offspring are good, but if we are talking turf pedigrees, let’s go with Luminist #3. Out of Tonalist, this young filly actually bested Shug’s entry in that PIM race. She might be able to do it again, what with Sheldon Russsell back aboard. His grass riding has not had much time to develop, but when he pairs with his wife, trainer Brittany Russell, he certainly has more than capable numbers. Look for this lightly-raced router to take to the sod and deliver a win!

Wager: $2 Exacta Cold, 3 w 6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 2: Ravenel #8, 8/1):

In this Claimer we are after some value, hence the backing of one mare named Ravenel #8. She has some upside besides the great price, and that is why I think she has a chance to win. Last year, this daughter of Verrazano had a 3-race win streak going at one point, and I certainly believe that there is the chance to replicate that once again in 2021. Towards the end of the Laurel/Charles Town Seasons last year, I think she got a bit tired, and now coming off-the-bench she should be mature enough to handle this group. Working out last time over the Laurel Turf Course is a good sign as Dale Capuano hands the keys to jockey Jorge Ruiz. If you ever see horses like this one, working at 3F going 37-flat, then that can be a solid reflection of fitness . Bet ‘em …

Wager: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS, #8 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 5F, ALLW42k, 3+)

I like a turf sprint at Pimlico more than any other type of race. They normally have a bevy of them, and this anchor today is going to be a barnburner at the Allowance level. There are a number of directions you can go, but for my money, I want to support Nothing Better #1 from the Duarte Barn. This 4-yr-old gelding has some major upside because even though he is #1 after the draw, he will be part of a “coupled” entry. That means that you will not find him breaking from the rail position, but rather from 8-hole. Being drawn down on the inside is never a good spot in a grass go at 5 furlongs. You just get pinned, and it makes it very difficult to do anything about it for the majority of the race. I think few post positions matter all that much, but this one is the exception to that rule. Hopefully, Julian Pimental can take advantage of being on the outside. With some Munnings bloodlines under him, a series of good works on the tab, and a horse that is coming off a nice break, he should be able to work out a trip. “Nothing better” than a solid price, which makes this wager even more inviting.

Wager: $25-W, $50-P #1
