As the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" rolls on, it is time to head to Oklahoma City for the annual renewal of the Springboard Mile. A $400k "Non-G" race, it is yet another stop for those that seek KYD148 Points. At stake are 10 Points to the winner, and 4-2-1 to those that round out the minors. We have already seen a number of 2-yr-old runners get on the leaderboard, and more are on the way. Remington Park is the site for this 1 Mile event on the dirt, and as in previous years, there is a good group that draws in for this edition.

Of course, the presence of HOF trainer Steve Asmussen will be felt, as he sends a pair of uncoupled runners to the post at Remington. Both Concept #1 and Classic Moment #5 are sure to be well-bet, especially since both have enticing form. The former gets Carlos Montalvo aboard, and this colt is by the red-hot sire Gun Runner. Winchell Thoroughbreds invests in good ones, and the homebred is no exception. As for the latter, the son of Classic Empire went for $350k back at the Keeneland 2020 September Sale, and already has a pair of solid efforts under his saddle. Winchell T-breds is part-owner in this one too. One of the leading riders in the TX-OK Region gets the call ... Stewart Elliot.

The 7 others that are entered in the Springboard are not going to stand by idly and let Asmussen go 1-2. Saffie Joseph, a trainer with strong ties to Gulfstream Park (his base) is getting aggressive by shipping in Make It Big #2. This colt was an alum of the 2021 OBS Sale back in the spring for $120k, and Red Oak Stable is pleased as punch to see their budding star make the trip. With an undefeated record at Gulfstream in 2 lifetime starts, he is going to be interesting. One of the leading riders in North America flies to OK from NYRA's Aqueduct ... Jose Ortiz.

Thus far, the runners entered look stellar, but there is only one trainer that can claim the mantle of defending conditioner, and that's the excellent Todd Fincher. Last year, he brought a powerful colt named Senor Buscador into the Springboard Mile for owner Joey Peacock, and he absolutely blew away the field from off-the-pace. A New Mexico-based trainer who was forced to relocate outside of his home state because of COVID track closures, Fincher travelled wherever he could to enter members of his stable. Now, he returns to Remington with Bye Bye Bobby #3, a colt by Quality Road who looks ready to stretch out in distance for the owners of B4 Farms. Regular rider Roimes Chirinos gets the call in a repeat performance. Fincher is back ... everyone needs to take note!

When it comes to local Thoroughbreds and their conditioners that have experience on-track in OKC, there will be a strong set of representatives that are drawn in. The appearance of Shamayim #4 (sire Lea) from the barn of Rosa Ramirez, Rowdy Rascal #6 (sire Den's Legacy) from Boyd Caster's midst, and Danny Pish's Revenir #8 (sire Hard Spun), will all add to the complexity of this contest. Each has a young colt who has at least 4 races at Remington to their credit, and their pilots include Eduardo Perez #4, Freddy Manrrique #6, and Danny Sorrenson #8, in that order. That kind of experience cannot be overlooked, and they certainly deserve respect.

Last, but certainly not least ... 2 other invaders come to town, and they will round out this 9-horse field. Eric Reed (Kentucky-based) and Ron Moquett (Arkansas) send their colts into the fray hoping for much success. Reed has the Richard Dawson-owned son of Keen Ice primed for a victory. Jockey Sonny Leon will guide Rich Strike #7, bred at Calumet Farm. This one joined his new outfit back in September after running for Joe Sharp. As for Moquett, he regularly comes to Remington, along with entering at Oaklawn and Churchill. In this year's Springboard, he is sending Osbourne #9 over from his recent works in Hot Springs. By Tapiture, the former student at Churchill is looking to make a big splash on Friday Night for an excellent barn. Veteran rider and former Eclipse Apprentice Jockey of the Year, Julien Leparoux, comes to town, and Moquett knows the mount will be in capable hands.

That should do it for the 2021 Springboard Mile PPs ... what a race for KYD148 Points it will be!
