Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Express Train #3, 4/5):
Trainer John Shirreffs is a “prince of a guy,” and a superb conditioner. His son of Union Rags might not be the greatest value on the Santa Anita card, but he is a “sure bet.” This runner is accomplished, and in my NTRA Top 10 for a reason. This one is a bet … a free square!
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #3
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 10: Varda #7, 4/1):
The former Bob Baffert-trainee comes over to Sean McCarthy’s Barn, and she should do well. The filly by Distorted Humor was last seen in the Beholder Mile (G1), where she was 3rd behind As Time Goes By. I like this spot, and she should do well with Drayden Van Dyke (a jockey who will benefit from the exodus of Prat and Rispoli). At 4/1, this filly is one to wager on …
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #7 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 11: Turf, 1¼, Charlie Whittingham S. (G2), $225k, 3+):
One of the “features” on the Saturday card at Santa Anita is this race, the G2 Charlie Whittingham S. One of the all-time greats, he was a master when it came to innovation in training. This year’s edition of the race brings together a good group of older males. The one to beat is Richard Baltas’ Masteroffoxhounds #6. As a seasoned “turfer,” he can get this distance, and will be ridden by expert jockey, JJ Hernandez. I will be using this one underneath, but I want to back Phil D’Amato’s Gold Phoenix (IRE) #5. With Kyle Frey in the irons, this one will try to build on an AOC win at Santa Anita. If he can access those great bloodlines, and get a clean trip, then he could be the price play of the day! What a race to honor one of the best ever … Mr. Whittingham.
Wagering Recommendation: Trifecta Wheel, 5 w 6 w 1/2/3/4/7

Enjoy another fab Saturday trackside at “The Great Race Place!” Best of luck on another run at Santa Anita Park!
