Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Eau Claire #4, 5/2):

This filly by Point of Entry is dropping out of MSW Co., and pointing towards an easier spot. The state breds in NY are formidable, and this should be a tough race. Still, I like Arnaud Delacour’s decision though, and she is going to be getting back to the turf. Sometimes a surface switch is just what the vet ordered, and Manny Franco is riding well right now. He has risen in the jockey standings in what is a very difficult colony. If you can get anything above 5/2 on the tote, then I think that qualifies as an overlay.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Baby Blythe #2, 5/1):

Here is a well-bred daughter of American Pharoah that looks the part. HOF trainer Shug McGaughey tried her against OC62.5n2x Co. last time at The Spa, and it was a disaster. In previous races, she proved she could go long on the turf, but it didn’t seem to be her day. Now, she should benefit from the cutback, and her fitness seems to be ticking along nicely. Luis Saez isn’t quite having the summer that he did last year in upstate New York, but that doesn’t mean he will not end on a high note. Watch out for this one!

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 1 1/16th, With Anticipation S. (G3), $175k, 2):

The Inner Turf will be the spot this Wednesday afternoon for a competitive “feature.” Not only is this a G3, but it brings together a solid group of 2-yr-olds … 10 to be exact, plus an AE. Speaking of that horse waiting in the wings, Mark Casse’s Determinedly #11 (AE) is exiting what I think is a “key race.” The colt by Cairo Prince was up against Ian Wilkes’ Our Dream Rye’d #9 at Saratoga in a MSW105k last time. They finished 1-2, and the latter ended up on top … a superb price at 22/1. I think both of these runners have the chance to raise their games even further, and I would not count either of them out. They will be facing a tough opponent in Shug McGaughey’s Battle of Normandy #1. The high-priced colt by City of Light is loaded with turf bloodlines, and co-owners, West Point Thoroughbreds, is expecting a major return on their investment. Kendrick Carmouche, who doesn’t get the opportunity to score aboard many turf stakes-caliber runners, has the call. One other budding grass star that I quite like (and he is going to be my top choice), is Andthewinneris #2. Trained by the venerable Wayne Catalano, this son of Oscar Performance is looking to stake his claim to a “graded” title. That will launch him into the stratosphere, and this is the kind of stepping stone that can get you considered for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). A Susan Moulton homebred, Catalano gets Flavien Prat back aboard. He was aboard at Keeneland when this one broke his maiden. Even though the Bashford Manor S. $175k was a miss, coming back to the grass looks like a shrewd move. The “Catman” cometh … What a race to kick-off the last week at The Spa! I hope our ‘AE” gets in …

Wagering Recommendation: $1 Superfecta Box, 1/2/9/11(AE)
