My Rating Scale:

  • Muy Caliente (For the Win…)
  • Sneaker Award (Shot to Upset or Chance to Hit the Board)
  • Snowball in Hell (Not Much of a Chance)

Morning Line Odds: 6-1

Swiss Skydiver (bought for 35k) does not have one of those flashy pedigrees like Thousand Words (Pioneer of the Nile), nor a popular one like Pneumatic (Uncle Mo), but there is no doubt that her performance on the track proves that she has outkicked her coverage…married up…well, you get the idea.

Her sire, Daredevil, never made it past the Fountain of Youth as a 3-year-old, but that does not mean he cannot produce female heirs. Her half-sister is Shedaresthedevil, a Brad Cox-trained filly that won the Kentucky Oaks, at a price. So much focus was on Swiss Skydiver in that race, that her “sis” was overlooked on the tote.

Still Swiss Skydiver, is a well-traveled 3-year-old this year and if you look at the number of tracks that she has run on, she clearly defines the word, “shipper.” I need that voice-over guy from the 80s Micro-Machines commercials to read all the places this horse has visited, frequent flyer.

Her year started in Tampa, pre-COVID, with a 5th-place finish in a 125k minor stakes race. I say minor because she then stepped up and ran 3rd in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) at the Fair Grounds. For most of the race she was caught on the rail, but I think she still finished well. That experience morphed into the Gulfstream Park Oaks, and there she found a pace she could control. Her front-running style emerged, and she became a master manipulator of speed. More class-climbing ensued, and she gained more experience at Oaklawn, Santa Anita, Keeneland, and Saratoga.

She rarely lost when she got to the lead, and though she was ridden by a different pilot each time, including Brian Hernandez, Paco Lopez, Mike Smith, and finally, Tyler Gaffalione, she was extremely consistent. Despite all these plaudits concerning her versatility, Trainer Kenny McPeek was forced last weekend to switch jockeys again, this time to old hand, Robby Alvarado. In my estimation this is a severe downgrade. Jockeys are not passengers, their decisions impact races. I think this will cost Swiss Skydiver and her connections. Minor awards for her at Old Hilltop!

Chance with Gaffalione: Muy Caliente; Without Gaffalione: Sneaker-Snowball in Hell
