Most Likely Winner: (Race 8: That Quality #6, 3/1):

Here is a well-travelled gelding for the excellent conditioner, Jonathan Thomas. Last year at this time he was getting ready to take his 1st trip around the Tampa turf. In January, that attempt was for naught. He was caught in traffic, and never settled … dropping out as the favorite. Thomas did what he does best, reassess and redeploy. The son of Quality Road rebounded in April, and placed against ALLW Co. Trips to Monmouth, Turfway, Belmont, and Woodbine followed … A mark of consistency for the most part, I would expect his return to Tampa to be a fruitful one. Getting star jock Daniel Centeno is a major plus. Augustin Stable has great stock, and should get another winner today with this one.

Wager: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Hannah Dances #2, 8/1):

Conditioner Tony Ferraro is up against some tough competition in this 7F one-turn speed duel. I happen to think that his 4-yr-old by Shaken Up has some plusses on her side. Sure, she did not fare well last out in the Iroquois 150k at Belmont. In her defense, that was against some formidable foes in The Important One and Espresso Shot. I believe she is battle hardened, and will appreciate the move south to Tampa. She was so dominant at Finger Lakes this past summer, and though that might not blow you away, she did just that to the competition. Her price should shoot towards 10/1, especially versus Bill Mott, Gerald Bennett, and Jon Arnett’s entries. Nothing like a price!

Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 6: Turf, 5F, AOC75k, 3+):

I am fairly convinced that this is a “trap race” for the Delgado Barn’s The Critical Way #4. Of course, he is a deserving favorite (back class is strong … Parx, Keeneland, etc.), but let’s not forget that he is coming off a bit of a break, and 3/5 is just way too short a price to accept. Instead, why not look to Jazzy Times #5 or Baby Boomer #8? Those runners have upside, and could spring the upset. I am hoping that About Today #7, who is getting Lasix for the 1st time, has what it takes to claim this prize. Here is a 5-yr-old who was undefeated in his native Argentina, and even though that was a couple of years back, it does not mean that he cannot surprise at Tampa. Sometimes in racing, you have to take a stand against “class ratings,” and look for value elsewhere. This might be the race to do it. As far as ticket construction, I like the Exacta Wheel approach. The plan … take the field, then roll the heavy favorite underneath. Could be a nice score, especially if one of the longer shots on the board comes through!

Wager: Exacta Wheel, $2, 1/2/3/5/6/7/8 w 4

Tampa Bay Downs is back for another week of racing … enjoy some of the best that Florida has to offer!
