Turfway Park hosts another eight-race card on Wednesday

Turfway Park is back in action on Wednesday, when the G1-placed Finnick the Fierce returns to the races after a lengthy hiatus. Our in-house handicapper has made picks for every race and provided select analysis of the card.

Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner:  S Man (Race 1) - It’s always a little treacherous to tab a horse in a bottom-level maiden claimer the day’s ‘Most Likely Winner,’ however S Man isn’t your average 7.5k maiden claimer. He’s obviously no superstar, but no one else in this race is in the same league as S Man, who has run reasonably well on both dirt and turf in his career and is coming out of a much tougher spot at Fair Grounds. Given his versatility I think it’s likely he transitions well to this surface, and if he simply runs his race he’s going to win.

Best Value:  Aldo’s Kitten (Race 4) - You have to take a bit of a leap of faith with Aldo’s Kitten, who was dreadful in his last start, but the price should be right to do so. Two starts ago this horse ran really well in a tougher 15k spot over this track, and if he gets back to that race he should be able to handle this field with ease. With so many other like-seeming contenders that figure to take money, I’d rather give Aldo’s Kitten a shot since he’s flashed some ability at Turfway and is going to offer fair odds.

Other Races of Interest:  Race 5 - I doubt La Isadora (#10) is going to be 3-1 in this race, which she is on the morning line, but I do think she’s a very likely winner as she makes her Turfway debut. Many of the other ostensible contenders in this spot have had numerous chances already and failed to break through the maiden ranks, whereas La Isadora will be making just her third lifetime start here. This filly improved last time when switched to the synthetic main track at Woodbine, and I’d anticipate her taking another step forward in this spot as she stretches out in distance for Mark Casse, who is having a strong meet.

Race 6 - Finnick the Fierce (#3) gets top billing in the day’s feature race. This horse is making his much-awaited return following a promising 3-year-old campaign that included a third-place finish in the G1 Arkansas Derby but was cut short due to injury. He clearly has the talent to win this race, however the time off is a concern and he’s never run on anything but dirt in his career. I think the prudent move is to play against Finnick the Fierce as the favorite, which is why Burning Bright (#1) is my top pick. He hasn’t set any stopwatches on fire, but Burning Bright was an impressive local winner in his last start and goes out for one of the hottest trainers on the grounds, Jonathan Thomas. If he maintains his current form he should be able to give Finnick the Fierce a run for his money.
