Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner:  Joy of Treasure (Race 1) - You always have to be a little worried with a 6-year-old mare who’s made just 16 lifetime starts and is dropping to the lowest level of her career to try to pick up her third career victory, but Joy of Treasure has maintained her form remarkably well and would be unbeatable if she runs back to her last race, in which she finished second to Turfway specialist Straitouttapopcorn. Her trainer Eddie Kenneally has been having an unusually slow winter, but Joy of Treasure looks foolproof in the day’s first race.

Best Value:  Visitant (Race 7) - The bulk of the attention in the day’s feature is going to be on the Cipriano Contreras entry of Hurricane Highway and Nun the Less. Both of these horses are formidable at Turfway, however the latter is coming off a very long layoff while the former isn’t all that great. Since the entry figures to be a significant underlay, I want to give Visitant a try as he cuts back in distance. This horse is a synthetic specialist in his own right, and I think this turnback is really going to work for him. If he gets enough pace to run at he should be able to pull off the upset.

Other Races of Interest:  Race 6 - One race prior to my ‘Best Value’ selection, trainer William Morey appears to have another very live runner in Richies Noble Girl (#7). This filly will probably go off favored, however she may still offer some value coming off a troubled trip against familiar foe Straitouttapopcorn. She should be able to work out a much better trip from her wide post and I expect her to finally break through this condition.

Race 8 - It seems hard to believe that Wind Twist (#3) will be 8-1 in this race, which he is on the morning line, but he may slip through the cracks a bit for such a small outfit and I think he’s got a great chance. I thought he ran pretty well last out in his local debut against a tougher bunch, and if he runs back to that race he’s an obvious player here. With very few trustable runners in this field, he’s one I believe will run his race, which should be good enough to win.
