Over the weekend it seemed as though we might see a handful of horses who took part in the Road for the Kentucky Derby contest this one but in the end only Wood Memorial winner Bourbonic found his way into the entries.
That 72-1 winner up at Aqueduct in April was the biggest surprise of the prep season for that big race and the Todd Pletcher trained three-year-old could only muster 13th in the big race before finishing fifth in the Belmont. Both of those results were not a huge shock considering the step up in class but the field on Saturday should be one that he can be extremely competitive in. The son of multiple Grade I winner Bernardini hasn’t raced since the final leg of the Triple Crown and has been training regularly on the training track at Belmont Park.
It is the Brad Cox trained Warrant who has been installed as the 9-5 favorite on the Morning Line. Coming off a win in the Texas Derby down at Lone Star Park, this son of two time Grade I winner Constitution has been slowly building up three-year-old season having finished second to stablemate Fulsome in the Oaklawn Mile. Florent Geroux is down to get the ride.
The third of the big three in the betting will be Indiana Derby winner Mr. Wireless. This son of yet another Grade I winner - this time Dialed In - finished fifth in his maiden but has stepped it up - going three for four since with his only reversal being to Warrant at that aforementioned Texas Derby. He went from there up to Indiana Grand where he took out a solid field in the Indiana Derby.
Brad Cox also sends out Kinetic Sky with Bourbon Thunder, Channel Fury and 50-1 long shot Americainaed rounding out the field of seven.
