The $1,000,000 Grade I Whitney from Saratoga is often one of the best races not only of the meet but also of the year. In 2021 it is very much at the forefront as a top-class field of five have been entered for the race this Saturday.

Neil Monnery has an overview of the entries following the Post Position draw at Saratoga this Wednesday morning…

Maxfield is currently sitting at #2 in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll and the three-time Stakes winner so far in 2021 steps up to face his stiffest challenge yet. With seven wins from eight in his career - with his only reversal coming out west at Santa Anita back in April, this son of Street Sense has always looked the part. Injuries derailed his potential chances at the delayed 2020 Kentucky Derby and he wasn’t ready to make a run at the Breeders’ Cup but now he’s in top shape. Huge race for him this and victory would put him very much to the forefront of the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He is the 8-5 second favorite on the Morning Line.

The Brad Cox trained Knicks Go came back from a disappointing run at the Saudi Cup to only finish fourth in the Met Mile. A month later he got back going with a dominating performance against an over-matched field in the Grade III Cornhusker Handicap down at Prairie Meadows and opens as the 6-5 top choice on the Morning Line. This horse has taken a huge step forward under the keen eye of Brad Cox and he’s clearly very much a contender in the Whitney.

As is...By My Standards. This five-year-old had an absolutely stellar four-year-old campaign where he won at the New Orleans Classic, Oaklawn Handicap along with the Alysheba Stakes. He came in second behind the Bob Baffert trained Improbable in last year’s Whitney and can easily be part of the betting this time around. With two runs under his belt in 2021, a win in the Oaklawn Mile and a second place in the Met Mile. You can’t rule him out. a 10-1 outsider. You can't get a much better rank outsider than this horse.

Oh and the horse that beat By My Standards in the Met Mile is here as well. Five wins on the spin for the Steve Asmussen trained Silver State including four in a row so far in 2021 puts this son of Grade I winner Hard Spun in the mix as well. A 4-1 shot on the Morning Line.

Nor can you rule out the winner of the 2020 Preakness. Yes, the connections of Swiss Skydiver along with trainer Kenny McPeek have once more decided to race with the boys in a big one. Defeat to Letruska and Monomoy Girl in the Grade I Apple Blossom is not anything to be ashamed of. I find it tough to ever rule out this wonderful filly and that makes it all five horses with real winners ambitions for this race on Saturday. It should be an absolutely tremendous race.

Happy Saver was not entered. The current favorite in the international markets for the Breeders' Cup Classic was expected but come draw time only five were drawn into the race.

Our man J.N. Campbell will be back to cover all the action at Saratoga this Saturday and handicap in my opinion - the best race so far this season. His Saturday column will go live early on Friday evening. Check back with us then for his preview of the race.
