Saturday @The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club …

Race 10: 1 1/4 (Dirt), TVG Pacific Classic (G1), $1 Million, 3+

“Win and You’re In” … Tripoli, BC Classic (G1), $6 Million

The Grade 1 Pacific Classic came up with an impressive field of 9. Leading the charge on the tote for most of paddock and post parade time was Royal Ship (BRZ) #4 from the barn of Richard Mandella. He ended up around at 5/2 when the bell sounded. The second choice almost right alongside for most of the warm-ups was Todd Pletcher's Dr. Post #3 at 7/2. Taking late money right before everything went off was John Shirreffs' Express Train #5, who seized the top spot at 2/1.

It was a clean start at the break, and going along with some easy fractions, the pack rolled past the Grandstand. Only Todd Fincher's 80/1 long shot, Sheriff Brown #8 trailed the field, but he would make a furious charge and finish 4th! Up front it was MyRacehorse/Mandella's Tizmagician #2 and Independence Hall #7 out of Mike McCarthy's outfit, who commanded the lead. On the backstretch, John Sadler's Tripoli #1 who sat just 1-2 lengths off the leaders, was in a perfect pocket down on the rail. Jockey Tiago Periera knew he had some horsepower under him, and waited for the perfect moment to unleash a devastating kick.

At the top of the lane, it began to look like Royal Ship #4 and Express Train #5 were low on fuel. That opened up a duel between Tizmagician #2 and the storming Tripoli #1. When the dust settled, it was Sadler's runner who crossed the wire first, returning $15.00 for a $2.00 win bet. Owned by Hronis Racing, the 4-yr-old colt out of Kitten's Joy, will return to Del Mar for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) come November. What a magnificent performance!

Race 11: 1 3/8ths (Turf), Del Mar Handicap (G2), Purse $300k, 3+

“Win and You’re In” … Astronaut, BC Turf (G1), $4 Million

All the money was flowing into the finale on the super Pacific Classic card on Saturday Night. It was Richard Mandella's excellent United #4 at odds of 2/1, and Brad Cox's venerable Arklow #8, who notched a price of 5/2 at post time, that commanded the tote. Most handicappers were fairly convinced that these 2 would vie for supremacy towards the conclusion of the contest, since their late turn-of-foot could be devastating.

At the break, the speed was more than honest, as both of the favorites settled towards the mid (United #4), and back of the field (Arklow #8). Making one big run was clearly on the minds of both Flavien Prat and Florent Geroux, their respective jockeys. But this was too contentious of race, and quickly it became apparent that long shots were going to be major players in the final positions down the lane and just before the wire.

In the end, it was veteran rider, Victor Espinoza who guided his mount, Astronaut #10 at the whopping odds of 24/1 to victory. Just up, and right behind him late, was Mike McCarthy's Master Piece (CHI) #6 ridden by Drayden Van Dyke at odds of 22/1. Both of these were joined by the frontrunning Acclimate #7 for Phil D'Amato (10/1), who was able to hold off United #4 at the end. The favorites failed to impress ...

As for Astronaut #10, a 4-yr-old colt out of Quality Road, distinguished by the pink silks of John O'Connor, the connections will be returning to Del Mar for the Breeders' Cup Turf in November. Their score brought bettors a tidy sum ... with a $2.00 wager being miraculously transformed into $50.00! Nothing like the DMR Handicap to put a punctuation mark on what was just a fabulous day ... where the surf meets the turf!
