Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 8: Lady Speightspeare #2, 5/2):

If there is a hometown favorite on this Woodbine Saturday, then it has to be this filly from the barn of Roger Attfield. She has the class and is a perfect 3/3 in Toronto. Regular rider Emma-Jayne Wilson has the call. If this 4-yr-old can rate well, and sit 2-3 lengths from the lead, I think she cannot be beat. That late turn-of-foot is awfully strong.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 9: Lac Macaza #7, 8/1):

Trainer Julia Carey has a nice colt by Giant Gizmo that is coming into this race on a 3 in-a-row streak. Of course, those victories were at a much lower-class level. Still, you have to wonder if he is peaking at just the right time. He clearly has an affinity for the AW surface at Woodbine. Luis Contreras is the only jockey to have ridden this one. His mount’s greatest weapon? Late speed … he has it on copious amounts! Hopefully, the tote will remain fixed on or above 8/1.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #7 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 10: Turf, 6F, Highlander S. (G2), $200k, 4+):

With a bevy of stakes on the Saturday card there are a number of options. This G2 race might be one of the best, but as you can see from the form, it includes nearly half of the field from the barn of HOF trainer Mark Casse. Out of the 5 that are entered, none of them really has that strong stakes record. I am inclined to say that Into the Sunrise #4 is probably the best of the lot. The Into Mischief gelding was down at Belmont at the end of May, and she was 2nd that afternoon in an OC80kn3x to rival Voodoo Zip #2. Jockey Dylan Davis was aboard that day, and interestingly enough, he will be in Toronto for this race. However, he will not be on Casse’s runner; rather, Christophe Clement has him on “Zip.” That is a shrewd move, and might prove decisive, if the 5-yr-old by City Zip takes to the unique Woodbine Turf Course. He is definitely a contender. My top selection though isn’t going to be Wesley Ward’s Bound for Nowhere #10. Even though this senior lawn sprinter is the classiest, I think he will be up against it here. Instead, I much prefer the form of Mike Trombetta’s Arzak #11. The son of now-popular sire by Not This Time won impressively last time in a G3 at Woodbine with Kazushi Kimura in the irons. His mount’s breakaway speed is impressive (fitness too), and if he can get to the lead, the race could be his for the taking. Here is the bet …

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 11 w 2/4 w 2/4

Enjoy some racing in Canada! Best of luck on another run during a Woodbine Summer!
