Parx Racing Track Details
Address: 2999 Street Rd, Bensalem, PA 19020
Website: www.parxracing.com
Meeting: Parx conducts races year-round, primarily on dirt, though it does offer turf racing during the warmer months of the year. The Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at 1 â miles for 3-year-olds is the biggest race on its calendar. The race takes place in late September and achieved Grade 1 status in 2017. It is accompanied on the same card by the second biggest race at Parx, the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion for 3-year-old fillies. Both races have risen to prominence in recent years and have become premier events for 3-year-olds of their respective genders. Parx offers many other stakes races throughout the year, including the Grade 2 Gallant Bob, Grade 3 Smarty Jones, Grade 3 Turf Monster, Grade 3 Greenwood Cup and Grade 3 Dr. James Penny Memorial, along with a bevy of stakes for Pennsylvania-breds.
History: Originally called Keystone Racetrack, a nod to its home state’s nickname, Parx Racing first opened in November 1974 in Bensalem, PA. When the track was purchased ten years later, its name was changed to Philadelphia Park, and a new turf course was installed. In 1990, the track was acquired by Greenwood Racing, Inc., a company founded by British bookmakers Bob Green and Bill Hogwood, who later partnered with Penn National Gaming and expanded into New Jersey. The track changed names yet again in 2010, this time to its current name, Parx Racing and Casino. Parx received much notoriety in the early 2000’s as being the home base of Triple Crown hopeful Smarty Jones, who came up just short in the Belmont in the final leg of his quest. It has also hosted such notable horses as Shuvee, My Juliet, Spectacular Bid, Revidere, Summer Squall and Broad Brush.
Facilities: Parx is a racino with 3,300 slot machines and table games, including blackjack, craps, roulette and baccarat. It also has an events center, the Xcite Center, which hosts concerts, comedy acts, and boxing and MMA matches. The Xcite Center also added a new poker room in 2018, the same year in which it was announced Parx would be opening a new sportsbook, to be completed in 2019. The racing is conducted on a one-mile dirt main track and a seven-furlong turf course.
