Jesus’ Team is a longshot here who earlier in the year was running at the maiden claiming level. That is not unusual, given that horses make progress over time, and when they are placed into the right positions, they can shine.

This Jose D’Angelo trainee looked sparkling for about ¾ of the Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga before being run down by Mystic Guide in the stretch. I think he just ran out of gas and maybe at Pimlico he will pull a rabbit out of the hat. Regardless of what happens, his trainer has had quite an experience stateside.

D’Angelo came up through the training ranks in Venezuela, and his father Francisco won numerous training titles from his base at La Rinconada Hippodrome. The Younger D’Angelo was no slouch either back home. In 2014, he won the Clasico Simon Bolivar, which is like the Kentucky Derby.

Like his fellow compatriot, Juan Carlos Avila, he eventually set up shop in South Florida just a year ago. Can you imagine that, coming to this country and just a year later, having a horse run on one of biggest stages in the country? I do not think Jesus’ Team has much of a shot, but win, lose, or draw, to offer a trite phrase at an opportune time, this is all about the experience. Enjoy the ride, Jose!
