Not many words can be written about the running that Thousand did in the Derby because he never made it to the track. Everyone was agog when he summarily flipped over and injured Bob Baffert’s longtime assistant, Jimmy Barnes. That moment set in motion an interesting story concerning the King of California and D. Wayne Lukas, two men, from different generations, that posses a mutual admiration for one another. Lukas allowed both Baffert entries to come and hang at his stable in between the Derby and the Preakness.

No Motel 6 here, as Thousand Words and Authentic boarded at the Ritz Carlton. I am a firm believer that Bob Baffert has this horse in the right spot, even though his record is far from spectacular in 2020. It is more than just the Triple Crown winning trainer knowing how to get charges ready; rather, he excels at taking talent and sucking the marrow out of every ounce of potential.

Dramatic, I know. It reminds me of the sport of rowing, where average athletes can mature into great ones. Thoroughbred racing has that quality too. Thousand Words was certainly no average horse because Albaugh Stables and Spendthrift pulled a John Hammond from Jurassic Park and “spared no expense.”

His Keeneland sale price back in 2018 was $1000k. The scuttle on him dissipated when he threw in a clunker in the San Felipe (G2) back in March, finishing 11 lengths back to stablemate Authentic. Flash forward to the Preakness, here, he picks up Florent Geroux, which is a major find. Maybe this will be Geroux’s chance to upstage everyone and win his first Triple Crown race. It is not going to be easy, but wouldn’t it be something to see the two Baffert horses charging down the stretch into a blanket finish? Count me in, I like it. This Baffert exacta might end up paying decent. We shall see.

Chance: Muy Caliente
