While it’s certainly not lacking in tradition and elegance, the Preakness has much more of a party atmosphere than its fellow Triple Crown races. Pimlico opens up the infield on Preakness Day and throngs of people congregate there to watch a concert, and to a lesser extent, the races. Though the racing isn’t on the same level as Kentucky Derby Day or Belmont Stakes Day, it is still world class, with 9 out of the 14 races being stakes. Whatever it lacks in that area, however, it more than makes up for in excitement. The festive atmosphere is infectious and provides a terrific introduction to the sport for the uninitiated, and can even get the pulse racing of the most jaded trackgoer.
