History:  The Risen Star has certainly lived up to its name as it has made a steady ascent to prominence over the years. Originally called the Louisiana Derby Trial Stakes and first run in 1973, it was given its current name in 1989, a year after the horse Risen Star won the race and then captured the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. In 2002, the race produced its first Kentucky Derby winner, when sixth-place finisher War Emblem went on to take the ‘Run for the Roses’ in front-running fashion. In 2019, Country House finished second in the Risen Star (to eventual Preakness winner War of Will) before becoming a controversial winner of the Derby via disqualification. Other notable winners include eventual Breeders’ Cup Classic victors Mucho Macho Man (2011) and Gun Runner (2016). Never hurting for entries, the race has been run in two divisions on four occasions (1989, 1993, 1995 and 2020).
