History:  The Royal Lodge Stakes has recently become the first race on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby. It is open to two year-old colts and geldings and is ridden over the Rowley Mile course on turf.

First raced in 1946, the event used to take place at the famous Ascot racecourse but has subsequently relocated to Newmarket in recent years, first in 2005 and then permanently in 2011. The 1960 and 1963 races took place at Newbury, near to Ascot.

It is also involved with the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series of races, with the winner gaining an automatic qualification to the Juvenile Turf as well as providing qualifying points towards the Kentucky Derby, making this very much a race of interest for American Horse Racing fans.
