Meeting:  Sam Houston holds two meets annually, a thoroughbred meet and a quarter horse meet. The thoroughbred meet typically begins in late January and runs through the end of March. The meet is led by the Grade 3, $300,000 Houston Ladies Classic for older fillies and mares on dirt and the Grade 3, $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup for older turf marathoners, which share the same card in late January along with four other stakes races. There are also several Texas-bred stakes held during the thoroughbred meet. The marquee race of the quarter horse meet is the Grade 2 Sam Houston Futurity. Sam Houston conducts racing on both dirt and turf.

History:  Sam Houston Race Park opened in the spring of 1994 and was the first Class 1 horse racing venue constructed in Texas. The track is named for the famed general and former president of Texas, Sam Houston, and was built at a cost of $90 million. It is used as a concert venue when races aren’t being held. In 2017, the track provided shelter to the equine victims of Hurricane Harvey, which devastated the Houston area but left Sam Houston itself relatively unscathed.

Facilities:  Sam Houston offers eight bars, two restaurants, grandstand suites, the San Jacinto Suite, Celebration Suite, the Director's Suite, the Sam Houston Suite and the House Suite from which to view the races, and the park contains many concession areas on the Paddock and Club levels. Horse Racing is conducted on a one-mile dirt oval and a seven-furlong turf course. The track is also known for hosting concerts when racing is not in season.
